I taught myself to play chess fifty two years ago at age six by checking out a book from my school library. I wish I could remember the title, but I do remember it contained a lot of pictures! I played as a boy at the local (Port Arthur, TX) chess club, and although I have continued playing informally through the years, my grandson’s interest that emerged last fall led me back into active membership in USCF and, consequently, Texas Chess Association. I am active in the Waco Chess Club, and participated this spring in the Red River Shootout in Davis, Oklahoma. I was a college professor for many years, and I am channeling my love of chess and students into coaching a new scholastic team for Bosqueville ISD. I hope to be certified in the near future as a chess coach, and intend on competing in tournaments and eventually raising my USCF rating to 2200. I would like to win the US Senior Open in an appropriate rating division within the next five years.
