PHANTOM: The Automated Chessboard

That is the same person that @chesslover0003 posted about when he posted:
IMO, it still seems weird that only one user is posting reviews.

That video is now 3 weeks old.

According to the creator there have been 27 boards delivered (and that was 7 days ago, so more now is likely).

Why no other videos?

I do hope the project comes to fruition for those that spent the money.

But the lack of other videos and the fact that they are almost 3 years out now is a little disconcerting. I have been part of numerous Kickstarter campaigns, several technology ones, and while there are setbacks and delays, when they take this long it is usually not a good sign.

I saw the trickle of updates over the years. It's no different from the other crowdfunded book, boardgame and videogame projects that were affected by covid. They were all delayed with their fulfillments.

I look forward to more videos and articles on this in the upcoming months.

Not true at all. I have been part of some that started around the same time as this one (Chessnut Air, started May 2021, second batch shipped May/June 2022) and I have had my products for a while now.

But ok, keep thinking that. (BTW, the Chinese Virus thing has been over for almost 2 years now. Just sayin'.)

I also look forward to more videos and articles. I truly do hope this becomes a good board to play on. It does seem a bit slow, as the only user showing games plays on Lichess and times out on all his games (including increment games).

I give the project the benefit of the doubt and say it started with the best of intentions, however, I don't think supply chain issues explains a lack of transparency or communication.

I'd love to hear from "Kyle" or other backers. I'd love to hear from any other backers that received beta boards. This is a pretty niche product... I'd expect some backers to be members of chess.com forums.

I'd love to know where beta products shipped from.

I thought I read somewhere that the KS creator warehouse in San Diego and that’s where they’ll be shipping from.

There are some KS creators that use the crowdfunding platform simply as a pre-order portal for their products. A few boardgames publishers are notorious for doing this since everything was already finalized and they just needed to print and ship. Some creators use it as a place to fund the R&D of their passion projects like some video game developers for retro consoles.

Chessnut used it as it was supposed to be used. They walked us through the design and manufacturing process. They even had supply issues and lockdown issues during the Chinese Virus lockdowns in their country, they kept us informed the whole way. So have other projects I have backed.

One I backed was a completely horrible project, they were still shipping product fulfillment in Feb of this year from a project that started July 2020.

Face it, you were proven wrong about your statement. Just admit it. You stated " projects that were affected by covid. They were all delayed with their fulfillments." and I gave you a concrete example of one that was not. There are more, plenty more.

As I said, I hope this is a good product, but currently it does not seem like it will be. Very, very slow with the finished product (and the Chinese virus cannot be used as an excuse, it has been over for a long time now), no real video updates except by the creator (those can be faked, and have been by others in the past) or that one guy who "plays" on Lichess (why not here?) and loses on time all the time (Maverick365, who joined on March 12, 2024). He played 14 games, 7 against humans and timed out in 6 of them. That is playing with increment, one game with 21 moves and another with just 19. Seems the "moving pieces" takes up

And still have to go back to the creator said there were 27 boards delivered that they knew of and only one person has an unboxing video? Why?

Have a great day. Goodbye

Phantom is still in the game, so the wait continues.

jasonclark83

I see that Phantom has over 1.9 Million in kickstater funding and was launched as a project in 2021. I thought that the project was very cool back then. However during this time many new manufacturers and providers have sprung up. But these guys are still in pre-order or beta stage.?

Wonder how long will it be commercially available.

Btw, the pieces look very thin as compared to the chess board

Please be aware only one person hass provided a review so far. I'd wait before other people are reporting receiving the product. This is also a beta version and you'll go through some development pains as an early adopter.

I noticed the same base size for all pieces too. I expect this is required because of how it operates:

  • It creates a standard magnet size for mechanism to detect and move
  • Preventing overlap means all pieces are the same base/thickness
  • There is a limit for piece thickness as pieces need to have space between other pieces when moving.

Its still too slow to play on really. You lose so much time just waiting for thje moves to finish. Thats why I now prefer ones that light up or indicate the move and you jsut make it, like the Chessup, ChessAir or DGT Pegasus

Agreed that the pieces look too slender for both the classic and minimalist designs.
But just like the Milton Bradley, Excalibur and Square Off designs, the chess pieces have to be small enough to mechanically move around one another properly. Visually they look like the pieces from these three manufacturers but on pillars making them look like totem poles.

It could easily be accepted as a novelty to enjoy playing with longer time controls while gazing at wooden pieces and chessboard instead of plastic components.

I have wooden pieces and a wooden board with my Chessnut Pro and I have made my own wooden pieces for the Air and Evo. Just used them this past weekend to play a game.
Next?

Absolutely agree. Even at longer time controls like 60|30 you lose a quite a bit of time waiting for the pieces to move. And I wonder what happens if you move your piece while the opponents piece is still moving - e.g. 1. e4 e5 and while the black pawn is still sliding across the board you play 2. Nf3 .

In my experience with the Square Off board if you tried to move before your opponents move had been completed on the board then it would not be recognised. You'd have to replace the pieces and make the move again.

Looks like it’s coming out soon! I’m excited for when mine comes in the mail, backers are supposedly getting theirs now so all looks good!

The pieces look comically small in relation to the board.

My recommendation is still to wait until there are more confirmed independent reviews AND when the product is generally available for purchase. Note: Backing on a crowd sourcing website is NOT the same as purchasing the product as there is no guarantee the product will ever be delivered. Please see my crowd sourcing advisory here.

  • The product is still not released for purchase
  • No new users reviewing the product
  • No new reviews from "Andrew H". Last YouTube review about April 23.
  • Andrew H's Lichess account has only played 7 games. Last game was April 17, 2024. This makes me think the product just doesn't work as expected or is a gimmick and more hassle to use.
  • The Kickstarter July comments show many backers not receiving delivery and asking why they aren't receiving it (despite claims of a thousand boards manufactured).
