Hi Guys ... you all know this set is the best!

1. Where in the world can I buy some (I cannot find in any chess shop, did they stop making them?)

2. If so, who is the manufacturer?

3. What is the actual proper name of these pieces?

Thank you!

Well as the box says this is the Ultimate Chess set.

It was originally produced for and sold by American Chess Equipment.

The manufacturer in Asia closed down and the molds were gone, never to be able to be used again to make sets.

Shelby Lohrman the owner at the time sold the company and went to work for them. He then found a manufacturer and this set was made at a larger size than the original. The manufacturer made the white pieces in a buttery looking yellow color. When this set supply was almost gone they had the set made with the White pieces being a more white color. This set should still be for sale, even though Shelby left the company and took over his father’s Chess business, The Rochester Chess Center. You should check out American Chess Equipment and maybe even on Amazon.

Good luck

Thank you very much for the kind knowledge!

1. Question please ... you share above a concern to me, as you say the newer versions are a larger size? You share "He then found a manufacturer and this set was made at a larger size than the original" So is the newer versions larger than the older ones?

Per my example below are these the same size as old school, or are they different:

Again thank you kind knowledge.

I own both the original and the newest version of the Ultimate Chess Set.

The newest version is slightly bigger then the original version.

The original version used Lead as the weights. Lead can no longer be used. So the pieces were made larger so the steel weights in the new version. Would weight the same as the original version of the Ultimate Chess set. That was weighted with lead weights.

Knightmare and cool on response thank you! I cannot believe this co. went out of business .. the yellow and black was it for life ... there was and will be no better ~

Why does Chess.com use quotes for repsonse and not a reply button? frustrated.png

If you want to reply just post below the last post. If it is to someone who posted earlier you can use @USA-Elephant for example.

Amazon sells the Bobby Fischer® Ultimate chess pieces as well as American Chess Equipment (ACRE. Shelby does not have it on his Rochester Chess Center website and I have no idea what the skinny on this is. He developed it when working for WE Games which I believe is the same as ACE. It also has a proprietary weighting system so the weights will not come loose as it was advertised.

You said you couldn't believe the company went out of business, as far as I know, this was a sideline.

An amazing example is The Drueke Company.

The Drueke Company sold out to Carrom, an Indian company and Carrom dropped EVERYTHING that was chess related, go figure. cry

Thank you and yes I have on order as speak the Bobby Fischer® Ultimate chess pieces, actually I have purchased I think three sets from different stores to which I think American Chess was one of them ... However I want to see the difference in them (am sure they will all be the same from each store but do want to see) ... yet I still want the orginal happy.png the ol yellowish black was cool and so sharp to hold and use on the board ... was nothing better ~

Thank you for data.

TundraMike

The original then the 2nd batch was rightly named "butter", then the Ultimate Booby Fischer®, why Bobby Fischer® I have no idea. You might want to get a hold of Shelby At the Rochester Chess Center if you are looking for the #1 or #2 set, he may have some older ones in his collection.

The problem with ordering new sets as I understand is the huge quantity that has to be ordered and paid for. A person has to sell many sets a day just to break even. Shipping prices from China also increase the price and they have risen like everything else.

USA-Elephant

Thanks Ill try reach out to em ... Thank you. As for the newer versions, you no need order bulk ... you can order them in sets ... many of the chess stores have them, and as shared I have three sets coming to test between the stores but am sure all same make/model. I reference my purchase here of the Bobby Fischer ones ... am with huge wonder if they are same specs. as the butter yellow and black.

Thank you ~

Eyechess

I believe TundraMike was talking about the retailer, American Chess Equipment (owned by Wood Expressions), needing to order a high minimum number of sets from their manufacturer to receive a shipment. This minimum number has quite a large cost to the retailer.

USA-Elephant

Yep probably true however I am not sure what order your refering too the old orginal and or the replacement ... as the replacement they have ... many chess shops have them ... however the orginal is a different far far away story frustrated.png

Wow. I've been away long enough from the forums to learn about this change this way.
