Sheriff Tom Dart has started a chess program in Cook county jail. The sheriff said that chess teaches mental discipline and that "When you make a mistake in chess, you pay for it." Dart said that chess would help the inmates to make better decisions in life when they were released. 150 inmates are participating. Grandmaster Anatoly Karpov was present for the grand opening of the program. Source: Chicago Sun-Times.

I am all for chessprograms in jail and prison.  Nobody on here would argue that chess is rewarding, challenging and enjoyment.  but it also provides the inmates positive experiences, less agression and reduces the boredom.  I wish this wasn a program in all involuntary institutions.
