For the US market, I would suggest emphasizing that it is decadent, immoral, and leads one down the path to perdition.  It's almost as evil as alcohol.

Actually, the problem with woton's logic is that this isn't a danger.  I do, however, see where woton is going in regard to the US market.

If you want to appeal to the puritans of the USA, make the point that girls might actually be empowered by learning and playing Chess.

They won't like that at all.

I'm pretty sure he was being satirical.

I wasn't.

Now wake up.

Wake up, sheeple. This thread is destroying chess.com.

Add another one to the list: Chess players are automatically defensive in arguments, because they assume everything is a battle or attack on them. Paranoia.

CardSure

Chess has been proven to cause bishopitis, a condition whereby players veer suddenly into oncoming traffic.

DrCheckevertim

CardSure, you bring up another good point. Chess automatically has a religious affiliation. One of the pieces is called a "bishop." I would prefer it to be called "pointy hat secular guy." I knew this guy once who played chess, and then he suddenly started to believe in the Christian God.

Close but no cigar.

Bishopitis is explicitly a fear of Bishops.

Chess players get hives near a cathedral.

This is even worse.  Chess may violate the First Amendment.  Thus, it cannot be taught in public schools.

Which brings us to another point regarding the chess pieces.

Chess endorses an old school monarchy. The King is most important, Queen powerful and yet powerless. Everyone else protects the king, and if a pawn must ensure his overlord's safety, then he will be sacrificed without hesitation.

gabriel112000

Chess leads to cheating!!!

This brings up another danger inherent in Chess.

Members of society who identify you as a Chess player make huge assumptions about you.  They also immediately identify themselves as someone who could beat you at Chess.

wrong again, woton.

Chess exemplifies the First Amendment.  Thus, it cannot be taught in public schools.

Oh I absolutely agree with you.

Anybody who sees the pointy hat secular guy and wonders too much about the difference between the light and the dark needs to be blindfolded immediately.

You're so right.  The ranks of the pieces are totally unacceptable.

The worst aspect of it all is the concept of promotion from a pawn to a Queen.

I sincerely advise you to refrain from that act voluntarily.

saltfish1

why are we have this disscussion on a chess website?

It allows the common man to believe that he can acheive royalty. He cannot.

We must not lead the public toward this kind of heresy.

The queen may repersent something else like a powerful general. In chinese chess your don't get promoted but pawn at the end of the board are considered valuable.

If a soldier does well in battle, he will obviously be promoted. Its the history behind.

Here's my idea. A rogue group of grandmasters band together an claim they are going to take over FIDE . They dub themselves the New World Order of chess or NwO for short. This group then goes around spray painting their initials on chess boards.

Jion_Wansu

chess is good when you lose money at casinos or lose money at poker tables...

twostep

If chess is a waste of time why become a grandmaster? That's his own opinion on dissatisfaction.

roryjohn93

@twostep I think Americans understand sarcastic humour...

So long as they don't get any paint on the d3 square everything will be fine.
