If I mention another site, it gets replaced with [link removed -- VP].

I am not even talking about competition, even if I mention a website it censors it

The site doesn't allow advertising of other sites. Topics where there are comparisons with named sites, that is essentially give advertising to those sites and chess.com doesn't want to provide a platform for that.

It is just as easy to mention things one may like on another site or that chess.com might want to add, but it can easily be done without naming any specific sites.

It is only a site, so I don't know what the big deal is. The domain chess.com is generic, refers to chess as a whole, so any topic should. be allowed.

I agree

You can think that but the site does not have to host any content that it doesn't want to host.

I agree too. While sensitive and inappropriate links should obviously be removed, why would a simple link to, for example, a page to insert some random safe website about a topic here be removed? It's not like we're advertising and want to promote the website.

If we say Chess.Com Is worse than [removed -- MS]! There is still no reason to flag us or remove our post. But that is happening to people who just say [removed -- MS] in their post

I use both chessdotcom and [removed -- MS] and they are both good but for some features one is better than the other.

If you owned a restaurant, would you advertise your competition?

Would you advertise that your customers should go eat at another restaurant?

I would. The reason is because I like competition. I like to compare my business to others. I dont see it as saying my customers should go eat at another restaurant, I see it as the more it's compared, the more people will want to eat at my restaurant and avoid the others. The only reason I personally would not want my competition mentioned is because I would have concerns they would be better in some way.

For me personally, the more I am compared to my competition, the better.

Even though it has been explained to me i keep thinking it's lame trying to remove every mention of the "other" site. It's not like people don't know which site is being refered to. And it doesnt look to me like chess.com is losing a whole lot of customers to it.

I guess its the same reason you dont see Ford favorably advertising Chevy.

Microsoft doesn't favorably advertise Apple.

Applebees not advertising Dennys.

Walmart not advertising Target.

I dont see anyone favorably advertising competition. I see people comparing. The reason I like to be compared, is because it's good advertisement for me. Ford does compare itself to chevy, and vice versa. They both advertise, and mention their competition. I'm sure it's because they both feel that by comparing they can best sell their product.

Chess.com can do whatever it wants. But it is pretty silly to pretend that not mentioning the other site will somehow prevent people from knowing it exists or using it. I'll bet if Ford stopped mentioning Chevy it would be because they fell behind in something they were previously good at. And vice versa.

Im not saying i agree with the policy, but it is their policy.  Whether anyone agrees with it or not.  They should still respect the site rule.

And it's not like you're getting to play Magnus Carlsen anyway, should you choose to visit

You can post about anything.....you just need to know where to post it. Chess.com doesn't allow nudity in the main forums also. wink.png

Avatar of notmtwain

By the way, people do post questions about games played on other named sites and those generally don't get closed or deleted.

/ Leeches are people too.

Mentioning other chess websites or showing nudity... Hmmm

I have to think about that one
