I feel the urge to cheat to "get revenge" when I lose a completely winning position.

I just want to make clear before the mods jump on me that I have never cheated. I'm just saying the urge to want to cheat is very strong sometimes.

So allow me to explain. I have quite bad anger issues when it comes to chess, I regularly smash my fist down on my keyboard or smash my mouse or throw something on my desk in anger when I blunder or generally just lose a game where I was winning. This doesn't happen with every game but it does happen in certain situations, specifically when I was winning the entire way through the game and then lost right at the end or something.

And considering I'm a mere 1500 rated player, this happens an awful lot. Now it's not that I don't expect to make blunders because I do... It's just the blunders that I do make I consider them inexcusable for my rating. The types of blunders I make are the types of blunders I expect someone rated 500 to make, not 1500.

Take this recent game for example

White (me) is completely winning in this position being up 3 pawns. Yet I played the incredible Ng4 which loses the game on the spot. I remember in my head at the moment before I played it I thought Ng4 protected the g2 pawn. I dunno why but I just didn't realise that the Knight isn't protecting that square...

And so anyone rated 500 or higher can probably guess what happened next... I am SO angry with myself and I want to take this anger out on another opponent (instead of my mouse and keyboard) but if I play another game and lose that one also, it will make me even angrier. So I feel like cheating, I feel like absolutely crushing the living soul out of someone so I can make them feel the way I feel. I know that is very sad and messed up I probably have some kind of mental problem but making these kinds of blunders gives me genuine rage and hatred that I want to make someone else suffer the agony that I just suffered.

To this day I have resisted this urge and have not cheated, but I will admit the desire is growing stronger the more I play.

And don't tell me to quit playing chess because that isn't an answer or a solution. I play chess too much to quit.

It happens more often than you think.

"A runner is in the lead for the first 99 metres of a 100 metre race".

Not to worry, making blunders in a critical winning position is normal. I once lost to a player more than 600 rating points above me in an exchange up situation in an over the board tournament game (it was my very first time I ever got onto board one in a tournament) after I failed to convert an exchange up winning position in great time trouble.

I was disappointed as well (though I did not get angry and in fact I was glad to achieve a winning position).

It's all part of the learning process. In your game, "Ng4 protects the g2 square" and making moves after having told myself to not do so are very common errors I make myself!

Allow yourself a greater room for tolerance. You have already gained an experience along the way.

One perk on smashing your screens, they get damaged and work weird so you get the urge to stop that.

The "slavery" to such bad emotions and feelings is a common, but very bad and very dangerous one.

You need spiritual guidance if you want to get a true and serious chance to set yourself free from it.

I can't be more precise than that, since policies here won't allow. But I wish you to find what you truly need. Meanwhile, try attach your "heart" to the good, and reject evil.

I see you are speaking from your own experience as a cheater. A shame that not all of us can resist the temptation.

I see that you can not resist the temptation to play Daily matches with your lowly rating (due to intentional time - outs)... unethically playing matches vs players of 1200 rating.
You see 2K - it work’s the same for you. People rationalize.... think their brand of unsportsmanlike behavior is exempt. Your post makes example- when you are the very worst offender yourself.

Steven-ODonoghue

There is a huge difference between having an account banned from the site for cheating and timing out a few daily games

StormCentre3

A few Daily games?
Not so.
 Get a reality check Steven.

2K is unethical. Cheating ? No. Breaking any rules . No.

An ethical player? Daily history tells the story.

Yes, I admit: I did make a mistake in the past to time out several daily games. So just because I did one bad thing I am now allowed to play any more daily games and compensate for my errors? My time out percentage, by the way, is the same as yours. Dead zero.

You made the statement that 2K was "the very worst offender". That's ridiculus when his only offence was something perfectly within the site rules. And you say it as if it invalidates his post condemning the cheater

Several???

You were the TD in a  14  day per move Daily tournament. In a final game - after 2 years of moves you found yourself in a losing position. Instead of resigning- you allowed 14 days to expire and time out.

Quit - simple as that. No respect.

Your zero time out is due to a clean 3 month history. Prior = 70 %
Can you man up - and not make these usual excuses?

If you can ... peace be with you. It’s a new start. But the continued rationale just doesn’t cut it.

You should not be playing Daily games in Clubs with your current rating. You know better. Simply play top board.

Cowbell721

Ummmm losing sucks - I think we all hate it.  That flash of wanting to win at all costs.  I'm not a 1500 ranked player, but it doesn't seem to me your posiition is quite as strong as you think.  Lots of opportunities to win back for black.

I am honestly not sure what you expect from me. I accepted that I disrespectfully timed out in countless daily games instead of resigning. I apologized for my mistakes. I vowed to make an effort to change and I have not timed out in a daily game since. Stop harassing me just because you decide to be a crybaby whenever somebody runs out of time in a daily game.

Steven-ODonoghue

I timed out or resigned nearly 1000 daily games when I closed my account

StormCentre3

2K ???

1st it was just a meager few...

Now you admit to “countless”.

Get the picture ?

So during a brief period of time, I timed out in "countless" daily games because I was not aware that it was poor sportsmanship. And because of that I will forever be considered a poor sport and there is nothing I can do to change that despite the fact that I lowered my timeout percentage to zero through my recent daily chess play?

StormCentre3

2K - you represented yourself as a 1400 + Daily. Enter Club events as such. Then you and your buddies mock opponents how they are destined to lose. Of course they will. Where is the ethics ?

Maybe in the eyes of BBJ and other senile folks, but noone else considers you that

There is no rule chess.com has in place that prohibits underrated players from participating in daily matches. With that logic, every player whose rating is an inaccurate representation of their strength should not be allowed to play in daily tournaments which is ridiculous considering that everyone's rating is somewhat off.

And I do not recall mocking my opponents about how they are destined to lose. Please do not make up lies for the sake of argument. We are talking about ethics — look at yourself first.

You reply with ... no rules are being broken.

I”ll only suggest this ...

Life is full of lessons. Learned or not.
