This is nothing new it has been this way for decades its just before the internet and all the social media it never got much coverage was just talked about at tournaments and those yearly USCF delegate meetings were full of people with hate.

That's because the competitive chess community is full of nerds who are arrogant and judgmental perfectionists with over-inflated egos bragging about their extremely impressive ratings in hyper-masculine fashion like a chest thumping gorilla.
In general, there are no nerds because chess is not about IQ or something like that.
It's a myth.
Chess is about work and skill. If you want to be successful at chess, you need to hate people.
And that's normal because we're hateful animals. Maybe.
