I don't think most of the players responding to chess discussions r rude. There r some of course, but that's life anywhere discussing anything.

I apply this Maxim everyday of my life :

“When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: the people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous and surly. They are like this because they can't tell good from evil. But I have seen the beauty of good, and the ugliness of evil, and have recognized that the wrongdoer has a nature related to my own - not of the same blood and birth, but the same mind, and possessing a share of the divine. And so none of them can hurt me. No one can implicate me in ugliness. Nor can I feel angry at my relative, or hate him. We were born to work together like feet, hands and eyes, like the two rows of teeth, upper and lower. To obstruct each other is unnatural. To feel anger at someone, to turn your back on him: these are unnatural.”

I've really never seen or experienced what you are referring to.

Of course people with a higher rating will be respected more in the field of chess, they clearly have a greater knowledge of the game.

Toxicity.?   Star Trek did an episode on it entitled..."The Enemy Within". A transporter malfunction created 2 Kirks.....one good, one bad. Individually, they couldn't survive alone. The only way they could survive at all was to meld them together where the good Kirk could tame his desire to be bad.

True, but there are also players with high ratings, who look down their nose 👃 at those players with lower ratings, and feel they have the right to be rude to them .

Actually, most of the titled players I've ever met (IRL) were quite courteous.

From what I heard so far I am surprised that there is not some idiot bragging about his rating and saying that u r crap and stuff like that and saying 1500 nobody and whatever.

Toxicity isn't a matter of rating. It's a matter of personality. Some high rated players can get egotistical while others are chill. Similarly, lower rated players can be either fun or arrogant. Its all about whether you let your rating get to your head.

Like, if you ask a question about an opening, he'll come back with "On your level ('on your level' is the universal deprecating intro)...

I always try to say "At our level", since the difference between me and a 1000 player is minor compared to the difference between either of us and a GM or super-GM.

This thread just proves the op's point.

I would have thought the other way round.

Nah... there's a MUCH bigger difference between a 2500 player and a 2000 player than between a 2000 player and a 1000 player... despite the rating gap being twice as big.
