by the way I object to the obscenity (even if it is cloaked as a webpage or abbreviated)

and I particularly object to the use of my pic.   I will NOT use that pic as my avatar and I will Not allow others to do so.

find another avatar.  the whole internet of full of appropriate images...

I once had a guy text me "man this is embarrassing " when I played him drunk. Tbh, I reviewed the game sober. It was truly awful.

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. For example, this individual seems particularly intent on flattering me:

It's polite to say good game regardless of the result, but not mandatory. Most people don't and that's okay, with me at least. A nice way of going about it is to say 'good game' or 'thanks for the game' if you sincerely enjoyed the game, for example if there was an appealing move or combination. There isn't as much interaction between people nowadays anyway, so you never know. A bit of acknowledgement might brighten someone's day.

The whole world owes him a 'thank you'!

I have no idea what "good game" means?

In OTB I always give my hand to the winner to congratulate him.

Is on line "good game" the equivalent of OTB handshake?

In any case , in on line you don't play against an opponent , you play against "something that makes moves on a screen".Either he is human or engine it doesn't make any difference.Would you say "good game" to an engine? Those of us that were used in playing "in person" have difficulty in accepting it as real chess. They see it as "screen chess"(subconsciously). On the other hand after I exchange some words with my opponent , I tend to "see him" as human and be less indifferent to the result or the game.Yes , he was always human but there is a subconscious(or maybe conscious) process before I start seeing him as human.

These are only some scattered thoughts.

You make a lot of sense. I like your analogy of "good game" being the equivalent of a real life handshake.

I don't think the point of LouStule is about "chatting". Is about being polite and human. When you play in club (I mean with a real person in front of you) you shake hands. You don't need to chat (there is a bar in the club for that) you are just being HUMAN. A human person who happens to like chess.

Never say "good morning" or "please" when you are in pyjamas? I wouldn't like to have breakfast with youwink.png

well, this  has after we dealt with a few people been a surprisingly positive thread.

I thought ,honestly, Lou that lots of people would be telling you that you can't expect online strangers to be polite.

but I think there is a pretty big group of people that would like the normal gesture of the opening/closing handshake repeated in some form in the online world.

I pledge that I will repeat these courtesies to any guy who reciprocates- but honestly, in the normal online game where no one says a thing- will I do this?  probably NOT and particularly in blitz where the gameplay is fast, sloppy and the win is almost not the result of "a good game".

in more sociable settings.  for example a 3day game challenge. yeah I routinely say the pleasantries.

but given that "good game" is more polite during a loss than a win, and more honest in a long endgame battle than a quick blunderfest....

I think I would end with "thanks for the game".

thats more appropriate for the sloppy games I usually play.

Anyways, if you tried saying "thanks for the game" after the random blitz game, your opponent probably wouldn't even see it-- they move to the next game so very fast.....

so for me it will be a matter of context.  with more courtesy extended to those that invite courtesy.

it would be nice, wouldn't if you could post a handshake emoji.

does anyone know if one is available in chat?  perhaps it is.  that may not be much communication.  but it is short and non-offensive for those that don't want to talk and a bit of a signal for someone that does.

I think the emoji is availabe in the editor
