A password should seem like its not the password.

Example-  notthepassword

Ibhanan

Don"t tell your password

MGleason

A password should be long.  That is even more important than using a mix of upper and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols.

"A sentence like th1s would make a good passw0rd."

That's long, and it's fairly easy to remember.

You should also be using a password vault such as Keepass.  And you should NOT use the same password across multiple sites.  If one site gets hacked, you don't want the hackers to try that password on a bunch of other sites and have access to everything else you do online.

Long is more important than the mix?  I beg to differ!

So what is long to you? 20 characters?  Ok.  How about this one?

Safe as can be!

Try typing that

FPTR

I use Last Pass and choose always for the longest (max 99 characters) and most diverse password. For example : ^pKgX@4j98&cV#AGvwYn!W1cwkVG*l#P48Xn77GJxGuJff$$S3UCVdgMusZmIWS!Ow4VSv$805b@8qVju9uEFrC6og#98FTE!r$

MGleason

Obviously, a long password of a single character is not a good idea.  Especially if it's the letter "a", since that's one of the first things likely to be guessed in a brute-force attack.

But as I posted earlier, we've trained ourselves to use short, highly complex passwords that are hard for a human to guess and hard for a human to remember, but easy for a computer to guess.  See https://xkcd.com/936/.  We can cut back on some of the complexity and make it easier to remember by going long instead.  Using a whole sentence is great, because then you can get a bit of punctuation in a manner that's easy to remember.

20 characters is pretty good, and 25-30 is better.  "correct horse battery staple" is many times more secure than "Tr0ub4dor&3", and much easier to remember.

MGleason

@FPTR, those passwords are great, but impossible to remember.  They're really good if you're copy/pasting out of a password vault like keepass or lastpass, though, since then you only have the password vault password to remember.

Just use one letter... its unexpected.

MGleason

"unexpected" passwords are no use against a brute force cracking attack by a computer.  They're also much more vulnerable to being guessed than you might think.

The most common password is "password".  "letmein" is another very common one.
