Such a cool design! I find it interesting that this set is named after the rook (Barrel rook chess set) rather than the very distinctive knight! Alexander Tchelnokov refers to the knights as Rooster knights. I think that’s a fair characterization; as such, I prefer to think of this set as the Soviet Rooster set.
I added pretty much every Soviet set I could find on Etsy to different categories to get a sense of the different designs and prevalence, and I collected 9 of these sets. I would love to own one, but they’re out of my budget for now. Maybe next year!

A vintage 1941 Soviet Russian Staunton style chess set with Kings measuring 4 1/8" in height and 2 1/4" Pawns. The pieces are not weighted. Original storage board show lots of surface wear. Production date stamped inside the folding board. Kings and Queens show the typical Soviet style finials.
