I was only going to order the 4.25 Dubrovnik Set from Chessbazaar recently (see "Post Your Chess Sets"), but, you know, when there's blood in the water ...

Among the suggested sets shown on the product page was their "1963-1966 Piatigorsky Cup" set, and I immediately fell in love with it. The beautiful knights, the double collars, the streamlined rooks - everything. So as long as the 40% discount was active, I took the plunge (Staunton Castle makes this set in boxwood and mahogany-stained boxwood, which is closer to the original, but bud rosewood/padouk is my favourite wood for black).

The set arrived today, and I'm extremely happy with it. As customary with Chessbazaar (unlike others here, I've never had a bad experience with the company on the 25+ sets I bought from them over the years), the set was shipped within 3 days of the order and arrived another 3 days later via FedEx. The packaging has even improved compared to a few years ago - the individual pieces are now wrapped in double foam sheets. Not that I've ever had a transport damage before though.

The set actually needs a 60mm board, but since I'm going to display the pieces rather than the board, I used the maple and walnut solid wood 55mm board that I bought from a German company a few years ago.

The pieces are triple weighted, so the complete set of 34 pieces weighs about 2.3kgs.

The double collars are the most obvious stylistic element of this set, apart from the very elegant and striking knights:

The modern-looking bishops also appeal to me quite a bit:

And the rooks are streamlined and quite massive:

Nicely crafted and smoothly made pieces, it seems to me that Chessbazaar have once again stepped up their game. A couple of tool marks on one of the black queens, but otherwise I couldn't be happier. A beautifully executed, elegant set that immediately rises to the Top 3 or so among my sets.
With pre-paid import tax automatically added during the order process, which absolutely eases and speeds up the customs clearance, the set cost a total of US$ 285 (€ 265), which makes it great value, too.

Problem is CB 4.25” Dubrovik pieces lack the elegance and correct proportion. The reason is the traditional dubrovnik set is 3.60” and it possible to copy it from the available photos but the 4.25” is CB’s own invention and so there was no photo to assist with copying it and that is why it has gone wrong. CB 3.75” dubrovnik is more correct and proportionate.

I’ve always liked the Piatigorsky design and one day I may buy such a set. Congratulations - enjoy!
