Joel also made a beautiful matching storage box for the pieces using the same material as the dark squares (Pommelle Bubinga). Note the high quality of the hinges and clasp.

I take the board to local tournaments and it certainly raises a lot of eyebrows when I set up the board and pieces (I rotate among several kinds of wood pieces). I lay the board on top of an old moupad board to avoid scratching or staining the underside. For transport, I use an inexpensive laptop bag which fits all 8 pieces securely.

I'm just stupid jealous; very sweet. 
I had this beautiful 8-piece chessboard custom made for me by Joel Will of Custom Creations. He was the board maker for HOS and is the finest craftsmen that I know of. I have had him make several boards for me and they are all gorgeous, but this one has to be near the top of my list because of the combination of beauty and uniqueness. The 8 pieces are held together by powerful rare earth magnets so the board stays together even if you have to rotate it on the table. How cool is that? In addition, the board is fully reversible so I used a Brother portable printer to label the notation on one side (fully removable).
