A Very Nice Plastic Chess Set

I  had a bag, board and clock all ready for my new Ultimate set.  When I realized that while the set was very nice, I personally did not like the yellow color and will wait for the next batch to come, hopefully in a different coloring.

So, I realized that I could use a plastic set to use with this Flex Pad board from the Chess House and a Chronos GX clock all in a non-logo HoS tournament bag.

I bought an original Drueke set when I first started playing Chess but sold it to a friend when I decided I would be playing with wood pieces, only.  I really liked the broad bases of the Drueke plastic set making the pieces very stable.  I did not particularly care for the type of plastic and the shiny and sometimes brittle finish.  And of course there was the loose weights issue which this set notoriously has.

I remembered that Your Move Chess and Games, aka Chessusa.com, had a set that was similar in design to the Drueke.  I had not bought anything from them in a while so I called them.  This set has a long name on their website.  It basically is a Weighted Deluxe Professional set.  Here is the link:  https://www.chessusa.com/product/61-206.html

When I called on Monday, they told me these sets were actually on sale.  Instead of being $20 they were $15.  Taking into consideration the shipping, I bought 2 of them.

Well, I am here to tell you that I like this set very much.

The pieces are taller than the originals.  But they still have those luxurious big bases.  The plastic has a satin finish and is nice to the touch when picking up the pieces.

Here are some pictures I took in my hotel room just now:

Note that the lighting in the room and the iPad camera make the White pieces look more yellow than they really are.  These pieces look the same as the original Drueke color.

I am really impressed with this set.  I plan on using it tomorrow, Monday, evening in a G/15 event we are having.

By the way, because I called them I found out about the sale price and they gave me a quote for shipping based on what they were shipping.  The total cost for the 2 sets was under $40.

Great set!  I love the flex pad boards, too. Sounds like a great combo.

Looks a lot like a Drueke, Ron, and you can't beat the price.  I might get me one as a backup, or in case I have a slob of an opponent who likes to eat greasy potato chips while playing.  Unfortunately, such opponents do exist, but just a damp cloth to these pieces and they're as good as new.

That IS a Great looking set !! I have a few Drueke Player's Choice sets and with the ridiculous prices of those I will be picking one of these up to analyze with and avoid damage.

Thanks, guys.  Yes, these can’t be beat especially for this price.

I recently bought this set too and love it. I used it in a tournament in Pittsburgh a couple of weeks ago. The feel, weight, and look are great in tournament play.

Personally I don’t really like rollable chess boards.

Prefer the foldable ones.

Well tonight I used this set for our G/15, d/5 event and some casual games.

The set plays excellent.  The broad bases are very nice when playing quickly.

I now remember why the original Drueke was so popular.

This set is a great reproduction of the original and even has some nicer qualities.

Q-What is the total weight of the set if I may ask?

Avatar of Eyechess

I don’t know what the total weight is as I don’t have a scale.  But it is weighted but not a heavy set.  I would say it is about the same as the other weighted sets out there.

The wide bases seem to be the thing that makes it stable for play.

It’s similar to the Noj Dubrovnik II sets in being nicely and lightly weighted.

Ok thanks.

I feel pieces can be too heavily weighted, particularly if you are losing.  You start to feel like Sisyphus rolling a massive stone up the proverbial hill. frustrated.png

Sadly, another company that is vastly overcharging for shipping to Alaska. $23 to ship a single set USPS priority to Alaska and no other shipping options. We are a state and we have flat rate priority shipping like every other state. Sigh.

I suggest you give them a phone call, tomorrow.  That is how I ordered and my shipping was under $10 instead of the higher shipping charges when I started to put an order in online.

London Chess Shop used to stock it but I can't see it now

What a pity.

Thanks

I have two of these - one natural and black, the other white and black.  They are cool sets that I like a lot.   The felting is not great.  It's very thin and flush with the bottoms.  However, I bought mine years ago and not from Your Move.
