I'm using arena a free chess program.
Like many other chess programs it can use open-source chess engines
It plays to strong for me, as I'm a beginner what engine would can you recommend me. I'm now at ~ 1050 (climbing slowly) rated here. I'd like to win sometimes too.

Any engine now play at least on the level of 1900, so they will be more than a challenge for most players.

I suggest using the engine, which plays in your preferred style. For example, I use Rybka Dynamic, as it often goes for open agressive positions, I like. It's also easily gives away material for tactical advantage.

Personally I hate Fritz. I played it, and it's totally opposite. Its slow and methodical. Any human would go nutz, playing vs a computer with a strong defensive mindset.

It also depends on the opening book choice of course.

I like shredder. you can set it on the elo you want. so if you're a beginner you can set it strong enough to challenge you but not so strong it utterly and completely smokes you. I have the iphone version and I am thinking of getting the mac version soon.

well i understand programs cannt make errors like we do, and much of our chess game is based on it, on the other hand its nice to have a program that you can always play or even setup to a certain position (arena allows for this).

Fritz isnt free, shreder isnt also only rybka has a free version but its way to strong for me. I know lots of free engines from this site :
http://www.tim-mann.org/engines.html and also on the Arena site.
But which one are poor players like me ?

Here you can play beginner-level chess against a remote computer:

Or, you might try beating "Little Chess Partner" on Easy strength.

I use chess engines for middlegame and endgame studies.  Occasionally I will use it to work on an opening, but the style of play is not like what you see in tournaments or correspondence or even with your friends.  Besides getting beat by the computer (Gaviota 0.33) has improved my vision of the board and my analysis of posititons geatly.

hmm this link plays like a human it seams not to complex and a good chance to win

the other link http://www.chess.com/play/computer.html gives a java error.

i wonder what engine is used behind browserchess.

OK i found something, i was reading about Rybka, and someone wrote that crafty in a tournament was second to Rybka. The new version of crafty has an option to throttle it down, so it can play really stupid, and can beat me easily, the strength is adjustable with a slider. I try to find out, what fits me best, i got to put it to the left maybe strength 5 or so LOL :)   Altough it does then play a game that imaginable more normal to me.

crafty is also freeware i think its a open source university project

I like chessmaster. There is many different personalities and strengths to play ranging from a monkey (completely random) to the chessmaster (very strong). You can set your own type of personality to match the playing type you like. It also has nice annotated lessons that helped me a lot, along with some other useful features.

OK i found something FlashChess its everywhere on the internet.
But best of all.. it runs on my Cowon Mp4 player, so now where ever i go i can play chess even without a computer.

.. ehm well i should buy a real board then it wouldnt even require bateries..

Arena allows you to decrease manually the playing strength of any engine, but I honestly don't know how effective the methodology is.

The same goes for the Fritz GUI and any engines you install on it.
