Looking for an inexpensive plastic set?

The 3.75" Cavalier Deluxe set (with extra queens) is on sale at ACE for only $14.50! Just received mine yesterday and I'm very impressed. It has one of the best looking knights I've ever seen in a plastic set. The set has a very nice look and a solid feel, with a matte non-glare finish and a hefty king that weighs in at 2.75 oz. The entire 32-piece set weighs over 3 pounds.

Thats a nice plastic set Lou. I was going to order one for a present until I found out the shipping was around 16.00 USD.

These places have to wake up to the Zone A & B boxes that have been available for over 2 years now. They are available on the USPS site and they are PRIORITY.  A is just a bit smaller than the Med Flat rate and B is a pinch smaller than the Large Flat Rate.  They ar eperfect for shipping sets 2 day service 95% of the time for less than anyone elses 2 day service or for that matter any service.  When I tell these chess suppliers this they question me like I do not know anything. Fact is I have been shipping almost everyday for 10 years now. When the times change I change with it. What I used to send FedEx now usually goes USPS in a Zone box.

Some suppliers want to make money off shipping and that is fine as long as they do not play dumb and tell you it costs X amount of dollars to ship when you know the true price is 1/2 of that. They want to be paid for their time to package and handle then they should say so.  I have no problem paying a fair shipping price as I know there is no such thing as free. If shipping is free then it has to bebuilt into the price of the merchandise.

I still haven't received one item in a Zone A or B box from any chess vendor and I have ordered off of many of them since the boxes have come out.  I find it toubling that they remain ignorant of shipping as it takes money away from the customer as well as the seller.

I'm assuming shipping to the U.K. would be prohibitive.

Nice set but I agree with wiscmike, they are clearly making it up with shipping and that is dishonest in my book.

TundraMike

Hi Aires360 I never said ACE was making it up with shipping charges. Shipping is just a bug of mine since I ship packages each day and make it my business to know the best, fastest, and cheapest way to ship. And for the last 2-3 years believe it or not the cheapest as well as the fastest way to ship is USPS since they have the Zone boxes out.  I only try to help some of these places out by telling them and they get mad that I am telling them how to run their own business which I would never do.  I am just telling them something they shoudl already know but like I said I haven't received a thing in over 2 yesrs the boxes have been out.

I did receive a chess set in a medium flat rate which could have easily fit into the Zone A for a few bucks less.

Foreign vendors are another story.  I can say with ALL honesty that CB has the fastest shipping from over seas. I can order a set on Sunday and it is at my front door on Wednesday morning, amazing. Most of the USA vendors can't do that.

Aries360

Correction then: I say they are making it up with the shipping. And if they're not then at the very least they should make an effort to lower those shipping charges.

i hate how the bishops look on this.

the HoS plastic reykyavik is the one set i have and will probably keep that for quite a while... until break 2000, which is when ill get a chesscafe one.

The bishop's mitre could be fuller, as is, it's slightly undersized, but overall it's not bad, especially for the price. I prefer this style to the ones where the mitres are angular or disproportioned. But to each his own. That's what's great about collecting. There are so many different types and styles of chess sets, we're bound to find one that fits our fancy.

Lou.. just checked them out on Ebay. They are now around 35 bucks shipped which is not that bad. Are they seamless? Are the weights metal? Thanks.!

loubalch

Kick, they're not seamless, but the seams are unobtrusive and don't call attention to themselves. Also, the pieces did not react to a strong magnet, so whatever material they're using is non-ferrous.

Sorry they're no longer on sale (that's why I try and sound the alert when I find these great sales). But they're every bit as nice as the Ultimate plastic set (which I also have) that listed for $40. So even at $35 they're fairly priced.

BTW, the knights remind me of the Royal Knights from the Chess Piece.

Thanks Lou.!
