I don't collect chess sets. I only buy sets I like to play with. I would imagine there are collectors out there though.
Anyone collect Zagreb style chess sets
Mike... ditto on exactly like 9. Although some are safe queens pro say at home, all kidding aside, I actually do play them also and buy what I like to use rather than just to have...
edit added... the 4 colored hats versus the 2 bishop hats on the opposing pieces imho are a bit much when scattered on the board, at least for me.
I own the 4" House of Chess Zagreb set shown below. It's an interesting cross between a Dubrovnik and Zagreb style, and it's nicely weighted at 62 oz.

Below is an Noj Dubrovnik for comparison.

I agree and just got a zagreb set with only the bishops having the opposite color hats . I plan to get a dubrovnik set next but I have to say I like the Zagreb knights better than the dubrovnik knights .
Wow Reb... Cool... Didn't know they made them that way... Post a pic sometime when y'all get a chance.
Ok I have been wondering how to confess this to my Dubrovomaniac pals, but I also just got the CB 4 in Zagreb. I still like the Dub best but the knights on the Zagreb are so elegant. And yes I keep one or the other out all the time for study and I am looking for local OTB action. I really have to stop buying sets now!

Hi Kick, Post was for people who buy Zagreb sets also. I also play with the sets I buy. I just used the word Collect in the title. Did not mean just buy and look at the set.
That set that Lou posted on here is a very sweet set as we played on it the other day. The pawns in that set are awesome, like the bigger bases.
I enjoy playing over games on any set I buy. But I don't think "buy and collect" are mutual exclusive.

I have a HOS Zagreb in Ebony/Boxwood, and a CB Zagreb in Sheesham/Boxwood. Both the Zagreb and Dubrovnik are two of my favorite sets for playing with.
Oh yea...now I remember that thread Reb... how much better that set looks with only bishop hats...me liked :)
No longer playing tourneys...Retired from the rat race too...Play a lot at the country club with friends after golf and of course grab a cocktail or two along the way... Had a number of sets at one time, but sold a few over the years... Now I'm down to the ones I like only, but on the lookout for three... an old Jaques, an old Dubrovnik, and a Plastic old Drueke. Good luck to me right ! :) If I do find any I'll play them at the club cause the guys I play with respect eachothers sets. Some of the sets I've gotten to play with are theirs and I have to tell ya, they're over my head...

No problem Wiscmike.! I am sure their are collectors out there that collect certain sets like Jaques, Zagreb, Romanian, & Russian chess sets.

That Zagreb set from HOS certainly is beefy & stout looking.! I like it but not the hats on the Kings & Queens but, thats just my personal opinion. Thanks for posting the pics!

9, actually the above set is from the House of Chess (HOC). The opposite colored finials are part of the Zagreb motif, along with the Zagreb knight. The rest of the set is very close appoximation of a classic Dubrovnik set. Depending on one's tastes, it's either an interesting mix or a Frankenstein monster.
I recommended HOC offer the set with both the Zagreb and Dubrovnik knights, as well as interchangeable finials for the kings and queens. That way you could easily convert into a nice 4" Dubrovnik set.
Kim try and get a comparison pic up of your Dubrovnik and Zagreb... Did you get your Z with just the bishop hats or with hats on the king and queen also ?
Hi Robb, one of your wanted sets should be fairly easy, the Drueke Plastic. I have seen them on eBay and also have two myself. Mine have seen hardly any wear and just have been in their boxes. I keep everything on the main floor and would never put any item I own in the basement or attic. If I start selling I will keep you in mind. Took me a while though to find the red & white even while Drueke was in business. They just didn't make them all the time and they used to sell out fast. Was easy to get the cream and black set.
as well as dubrovnik sets?
