Anyone know what set this is?

I've seen a set with round undersides before but cannot remember where.
I believe this set to be German

Thanks Robert. I agree about the replacements - wild colour variation there! So were the pieces designed to wobble but not fall down, like weebles?

Thanks for the replies Gents.
I may bid on this - it's bundled in the same lot as a vintage BCC set, with xylonite knights. No idea how much they're worth though!

Hammer price £850 - far more than I was prepared to pay. I think most of the money was in the BCC set (pictured below), and some other people recognised it as such

No they didn't. This was a live auction and I only just noticed this lot a couple of hours before it came under the hammer so I didn't have time to request more photos from them. People in the room who had a chance to examine them would have had a much better idea. From one of the photos it looks like they came with a cheap pine slide top box which would not have been original to the set.

This wasn't eBay, this was a live auction.
Here's the URL, don't know if you'll be able to see it:

I hope this helps, K.P.

It does help - thanks for that. The pics on that website look to be a similar but higher quality set

Matt, Jon Crumiller has a set in his collection. You can see it here: http://www.chessantique.com/chess/chess_pages/travel/SchmitthennerShipSet.htm
Thanks, I'd not seen that. It's definitely a ship set then - although the one in the Crumiller collection looks to be more Regency style as opposed to Staunton

Don't forget that as well as buying the set you will also need to buy a special board, and of course a ship.

Came across this thread and figured I'd share this set I've had my eye on for some time.
