is it worth it to get a chess clock? I would use it probably once a month. Maybe more. right now i am trying to get playing chess face to face. What do you think?

CP6033

why do you think that?

Tough to play blitz without a clock.  Plus, they're pretty cheap.

well for me i play longer time controls normally. This is the thing, i would love to have a chess clock but i don't know if i would use it enough. The cheapest you can get that  i have seen (new i believe) is $16 which is not much.

Nowadays, many use the term "game timer" instead of "chess clock".  And they're correct, as a game timer can be used in many different games.

I've also used a chess clock on cross country driving to help fairly share driving time with a co-driver.

In any chess tournament, chess clock use is a requirement.  Don't be a moocher by always using others' equipment.

Even in causal games, a chess clock is useful for enforcing discipline of thought and also helps being courteous to an opponent.

Why use things that are already there and free to use if you can buy your own! I don't understand this way of thinking. If everyone had this attitude we would need 5 earths.

If you have a smartphone you can get an App for that. It's more than enough for private use and tournaments always use the clocks of their local chess-clubs (where they are used regularly!) so you don't have to bring your own.

Unless you plan on kicking the bucket in the next few weeks, buy an inexpensive one. You'll have it available for otb games and tournaments. Unless you abuse it or start playing constantly so that you wear it out, it'll last a lifetime, and if you use it that much, you'll want to spring for a better one with good reason. Just buy the dang thing.

Get a good one-I'm more old school so here's mine...

If you are going to be playing in real, live chess tournaments then yes a chess clock will be necessary.

Lol, don't be a moocher. I am sorry, but that is funny to me. I bought a really nice set (the best I could afford at that time), and clock, just to use in tournaments, way better than any plastic set, everyone I played, never had any problem playing on my equipment. I also didn't consider it mooching, I always asked them if they minded playing with my equipment as well, just in case someone might not, but everyone said no problem. I wanted to bring something pleasant, and beautiful to the game, so others could enjoy it as well. Just my 2 cents.

In the U.S., players bring their own equipment.  It's a rare tournament where anything other than scorecards are provided.

chess clock free for android, simple and can set any time for either side. (Good for playing at home with friends)

FrankHelwig

I love chess clocks... Laughing

Bardu

Yeah, I'd get one. In the US clocks are not provided.

toiyabe

If you plan on playing tournaments, definitely.  If you or your opponent don't have a clock then you have to ask around for someone else's or use a junker thats provided by whoever is running it.

Great photo, Frank. You do love chess clocks! I'm also sensing that you love blitz as well. Call it a hunch. lol

If you have insufficient motivation to acquire and use an inexpensive chess clock, then you likely also have insufficient motivation to learn to play decent chess.  Try a different and less challenging game.
