Now this I don't understand. If you take good care of your chessmen, they ought to last you for the rest of your life, thus being a non-reoccurring expense. 

I bought the standard FIDE approved set, because I think they're the nicest ones, really. - They weren't that expensive either, and quite frankly, it was money well spent (~50€). - After all, I'll have to look at them on a daily basis for some 40-60 years.
