RC - Thanks for the research and the pictures!
Is the Renegade set pictured your set or from your wayback search? How do you like playing with it? From the sounds of it you don't play with it too often?

I go back and forth between loving it and thinking the knights are a little grotesque.

Gosh...

This chess set? I want it! Not trying to sound like Veruca Salt (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl), but it looks totally awesome! Anyone who has it: I envy you.

But you know not in a bad way! I'm happy for you

What a cool set this is

The Improved Royal chessmen shown above in Figure 88 of Fersht's book from Jon Crumiller's collection are interesting, as the knights are not on elevated bases like the advertisement for those sets suggested. As Mick Deasey and Guy Lyons put it in Lyons/Deasey, The British Chess Company - Stroud and London, p. 14: "BCC could be brilliant but not necessarily consistent." I have Improved Royal chessmen that are consistent, i.e. with knights on elevated bases and the kings with the Eastern tear drop finial.

Moffatt's last Royal design as it appeared in a January 1902 publication.

@SquidDr, you are very welcome. No, the online research was just to make sure of my memory as to time frame. The pics are of my set, on my chess table.  I have quite a large collection, and to rotate through them at the rate of one a day would take over a year. I have my favorites, and I keep a few extras around, but most of them are in long term storage. I happened to pull the box this one was in out of storage last week to play through. It plays nicely. It's well weighted, although not as heavy as some HOS sets. IT fits both a 2" of 2-1/4" board.

That's a lot of bags of chips.🙂

Grandpa and I used to play on a set. I inherited it and now play with my son. Googled it out of curiosity and this came up. They're beautiful to play with and, having played with them for 40 years, had no idea they were special!

BCC imperial has some of the most intricately carved chess knight faces. The veins on the face would be very difficult for a carver to get through.

I believe these knights have a knight faces being dye cast in plastic molds.
