Gambit Publications offers a series for kids. Murray Chandler wrote a more basic, general book in this series (Chess for Children) while the others are more advanced. Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess and the old Usborne books (David Norwood wrote a couple) are other visual options to avoid notation.
