Beginner/ idiot guide to software

Hi, I'm not a beginner to chess but only just started to think about using software and the whole PNG/ database stuff sounds interesting, but I need a point in the right direction for a general overview and idiot guide to using chess software.

After searching these forums last night I downloaded Chessbase Light to try out, a free playing chess engine (WinboardX with free Rybka) and I downloaded the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings (PGN) from downloads section, but I found it all a bit overwhelming.  I'm quite computer literate and sure I soon get to grips with it all soon but was just wondering if anyone knows of a usefull starting point out there on the web for getting my head around it all.

Thx

Well, the problem, IMO, with chessbase light is that you can only use it with fairly small databases w/o paying. For database software, Id recommend chessDB (sorry, I don't have the link available, but if you google it, it will be the first entry). I'ts completely free, as well, it has some features that allow you to get some pretty large, good quality databases.

Baseballfan thanks i like the look of that especially as it has a nice user guide which is what i need to understand how to use these programs, and all for free which is what I want until I get to grips with this all.

I'm a bit confused about PNG how to save files and view it in database, say I'm playing Live on this site how do I save the game?
