I'd have to recommend "The Complete Idiot's Guide To Chess".

It is an absolutely fantastic book and easy to go through. You also learn about some great players of the past, websites for chess and playing the computer...but....most of all....

The tactical puzzles and overall depth of material will "definitely" make you a better player quite quickly......Fantastic book!

Good luck
