Best Chess Computer Mouse?

I don't play speed chess much, but what's a good computer mouse to use? I've used a Dynex Optical Mouse DX-WMSE2 Wired mouse for years for the simple fact that it came with my desktop computer when I bought it. I've never had it replaced, but the right-click isn't working that well. I have to click it like 2-3 times for it to register once and I use it for lots of things such as drawing arrows when I play live rapid chess for my newer YouTube playlist:

Back to the topic though: I would like a budget-friendly option, yet wouldn't mind spending a bit more for a better quality mouse if it's worth it; this is probably the time, since I need to replace this mouse anyway.

I remember in this article by the late GM Daniel Naroditsky https://www.chess.com/article/view/the-art-of-time-management sharing that GM Hikaru Nakamura recommended the budget-friendly Logitech M305 Wireless Mouse for speed chess. I've never used a wireless mouse before. It sounds nice to not have to deal with a wire, but I'm on the computer pretty much all day (and sometimes all night playing chess ), so I don't like the idea of a wireless mouse requiring batteries, or constant recharging.

Should I just find the same Dynex mouse type I'm used to? Should I get the wireless Logitech mouse Hikaru recommends? Should I get a different mouse entirely? Any advice would be appreciated.

I use a Logitech g502 Lightspeed (wireless) which is about 5 years old now. Due to its occasional stutter causing mouseslips, it may be nearing the end of its lifespan, but it’s served me quite well. I can outrun pretty much anyone in a time scramble, which has helped me reach much higher bullet and blitz ratings than I otherwise would have.

Why do you strong players never play speed chess?

I use a cheap gaming mouse, the Logitech G203 Lightsync.
It's light in my hands, it has 2 thumb buttons that can replace keys on my keyboard.
In those 4 years I'm playing online chess I only remember having 2 mouseslips with it.
It has a wire though.

Also, the g502 lightspeed requires charging maybe once every several days. The battery life is quite good! You can also use it while it is charging.

It depends on what level and their purpose for playing.

Many strong players avoid speed chess because it reinforces the habit of moving quickly and this can really hurt your classical (or other long-time control) chess if you transfer this quick thinking into your games and move impulsively when you should be practicing calculating deeper (which speed chess also doesn't give as much time for).

That being said, many players on chess.com stop playing as much rapid once they get to about 2200 rating on here because it takes a bit longer to find rated games. This is more true the higher rating you get. Imagine you are someone like Hikaru Nakamura in the 3000+ speed chess range (in his case, several hundred points higher). How many people in the entire world are this rating? If his rated challenge seeks are plus or minus 200 points (default setting), then there's literally fewer people in the world chess.com can pull from, so he's basically stuck waiting for someone to be online at the same time and willing to play that exact time control at that moment. This is one reason a lot of top players will agree to play a series of games with someone else to essentially farm them for rating; it's not as malicious as it sounds; they just aren't able to find similarly rated opponents as easily...

so they switch to bullet/blitz (most titled players I observe seem to play 3 min blitz).

There's also many strong players (some of them titled players) who just want to play chess a ton for pattern recognition, or testing a new opening etc. and speed chess is great for this. It depends what your chess goals are, but lots of speed chess isn't typically recommended for improving at long time controls and this is why many stronger players tend to not play much speed chess; it's the not playing speed chess which has helped them reach those higher ratings in the first place.

Logitech MX Vertical Wireless Mouse

That's what I bought after painful tendonosis in my right arm (hand to shoulder). Due to poor ergonomics while playing Bullet and otb Blitz, I had a "chess injury" and my physician sent me to physical therapy.

Since you are on the computer frequently, a vertical mouse would be a good investment for your health and it performs well for speed chess.

The best mouse depends on your specific preference, hand size/shape, wrist, usage, habits etc. You can use eloshapes.com to compare the specs of different mice.

You can also use these websites to practice chess mouse speed directly.

I don't have much experience in a variety of different mice, but the Redragon Predator has to be a steal for $15.

I also use a cheap logitech mouse, razer basilisk I think. Useful for general work and it lasts me a few years at a time at leasthappy.png

I use the Logitech Wireless Mouse Silent Bluetooth Unifying 7-button M590, and I have never jhad any problems with it. Very quiet for speed chess and lets you focus pretty well. I have used this mouse fo rabout 4 - 5 years, and considering my elo, I think it's a must-buy mouse.

Something that’s wireless, light weight, ergonomic (easier on the wrist)

I recently got this one wired version and really like it but I’m still bad at blitz so can I blame the mouse? 🤣

Its my mouse

Avatar of duntcare

i dont play but requirements should be very similar to a fast to move gaming mouse

if you like lighter mice, then maybe consider one of the ultralight gaming mouse recommendations since it would be designed to be moved quickly and precisely

wireless mice also tend to have slightly higher latency if you care about that thing, although the difference is very small (1-2 ms with a dongle) but 8-15 ms with a bluetooth one

the well recommended ones should be of good quality

Any Logitech vertical mouse I recommend. Underrated how much relief you give you hand over time.

Avatar of chanelno5x

So true about the vertical mouse!

Although, the mouse that Hikaru recommended works well for speed chess and it's under $20.

I hope whatever you choose is a good fit.

I recommend you an affordable mouse with good quality. I have used this mouse myself and I am satisfied with it. In our country, since we are a third world country, it is very important that one can distinguish good from bad products, and this mouse is really good and works. I will send you the link, which is in an Iranian market, but you can order it on Amazon after opening the link and seeing the mouse and its model. It is also very suitable for gaming, it is fast, and its right click is very strong.

Thank you for the suggestions everyone. The computer mouse I bought and using now is the Redragon Predator M612 (wired) mouse. I'm still getting used to it as I still misclick a few times in chess.com checkmate drills, but I've already adjusted to it much improved from when I first tried it and I hope in a day or two, I'll be at the smooth feel I used to have. I don't want to think about moving the mouse, I just want to think chess happy.png
