One of my favorite books is “Test Tube Chess” by AJ (John) Roycroft. I’ve had it for 20+ years and always find something amazing when I open it and select a study to examine. It inspired my chess.com username!

From a Silman book review on Endgame Challenge by Nunn he recommended: Stalwart authors John Beasley and Timothy Whitworth have teamed to produce “Endgame Magic”, an exceptional text, which could serve well either as an introduction to endgame studies or as a treasure trove of over 150 samples of sublime beauty that could be shared at a chess club or within a chess lesson.

Sir,

What about 150 endgame studies Leonid Kubbel.

Mate in Two Moves by Brian Harley, is a classic on chess composition. Hard to find, it details the complete art and science of chess enigmatology, including retrograde analysis. John Nunns Solving in Style is similar but not as nuanced as Harley for those who want to compose as well as solve. Finally, for solvers, Mate in 4 Chess Puzzles by Bill Harvey has 1128 of the toughest puzzles youll find!

The art of the Endgame from Jan Timman is a great book! Timman has also great studies.

Some good sources for composed endings are the following.

"Chessboard Magic: 160 Brilliant Chess Endings," by Irving Chernev

"Endgame Challenge: Test Your Skills with 250 Brilliant and Instructive Chess Endgame Studies," by John Nunn.

"The Manual of Chess Combinations, volume 2 and volume 3," by Sergey Ivashchenko -- don't let the title fool you. Both volumes contain many excellent composed chess endings.

Thanks @mldavis617, I had a copy of Polgar's book when I was starting out, but at the time I wasn't interested in the composed mates in 2 and 3. I am intending to get another copy now.
