What is different about the "improved" 2018 version?

Actually I will be satisfied with an apology from you.

Eyechess,

You keep claiming you want others to comment on the set's "playability," even though this is really nothing more than "how the pieces feel in my hand when I pick them up and move them."

The world lockdown is making everyone a bit crazy.  We don't need to be aggravating the craziness here.

I am not claiming anything.

I do want to hear from people that have handled these pieces on how well they handle.  Do you know?

There are definitely some sets that play and handle better than others.  For instance the Noj Dubrovnik II and Minceta sets play exceptionally well.  The HoS Drueke wood, version 2 set also is very nice in handling.

The HoS Zagreb 59’ does not play or handle that well, for instance.

It is not a matter of playing better or not, but how much you enjoy playing by having a nice set in your hands and that you really appreciate, IMHO.... YMMV

,

I bought the FIDE DGT enabled weighted pieces from Dedale, two weeks ago for 250 euros at a 50% sale. Soon as I made purchase, the price went up to 250 euros, which is still pretty low comparing, but they’re out of stock now.

https://www.dedale.be/fr/en-promo/8867-echecs-pieces-electroniques-fide-lestees.html

they do still have the unweighted  set for 215euros

Cant recommend them enough, aesthetics, playability, weight, all great.
It’s one of those set that you have to see up close to appreciate, especially the knights!
here are some pics on my DGT Smartboard, which I have encased in a wooden art frame - covered by a 0.5mm plastic protector.

This looks very nice, thank you.

Great set-up @gregoeypapaioannou. Does the smart board work with the green roll up board on top?

Avatar of gregorypapaioannou

Zagryan, yes, it does work with the green mousepad roll just fine!
I took a video to demonstrate but don’t know how to upload it.

Glad you bought the set.....Let's face it.If you want it and went for it,there was a good reason. You have enough experience to make up your own mind and not put yourself in the line of fire.

Enjoy it.

I am not attacking you. If you want to spend more then spend away. You do understand how you come off as a snob when cheaper alternatives are suggested to you and you turn your nose up at it and think that the quality sucks due to the price point. 2013 and 2018 looks exactly the same to me. I don't see any difference. Unlike the Sinquefield Cup sets where I do see a difference within the set visually. Even the Official site states that there is no change or update. It is the same set used in 2018 and the three previous Championship matches. So your notion of an updated set is nonexistent.

As for my friend's RCM FIDE set goes. I never played with the set. So I don't know how it handles during a game. Like I said in prior post. The set doesn't do it for me personally. I personally think that it is an ugly set. So I couldn't give you my opinion on how it handles. Another thing I said was handling is subjective. It is a personal taste thing and nothing else. You can get the RCM FIDE set and if you don't like it. You can always send it back and know that it truly wasn't the set you were looking for. However if another chess player has the RCM FIDE set and it truly feels and handles the same as the set you end up paying 2 times as much for the set you bought. You will realize that the extra money wasn't spend on quality but rather the middle man's overhead costs.

Did you not read that I bought a RCM set in Rosewood?
Snob?!?

Just because I have pointed out the lower quality in a high number of these very low priced sets, I am not a snob.

If anything, you are a reverse snob.  I started this thread asking players if this set played well.

I only attacked your snobbish behavior not you personally. There is a difference. I am glad to see that you did give RCM a chance to prove to you that you don't have to spend tons of money for quality. I have 2 sets from them and I truly do enjoy them along with the savings I got from them.
