Big, Old and Heavy Set - Anyone seen one like it?

I bought a set from eBay a while ago. It's a real mixture of good and bad.

It's ebony and boxwood, weighted, and the pieces are mostly high quality. If anyone knows the maker I'd be interested to know. Here is the set in the box:

The rooks are quite distinctive - usually with Staunton sets the top of the rook is broader than the middle. On these, it is almost the same giving them a chunky look, and making them look like cannons. I've also shown the weight of this, 99 grams

This is a marked set - well, sort of. It wasn't originally marked, but a previous owner has marked one of the White Rooks, and - inexplicably - one of the White Bishops

The box is also not original to the set - obviously - but it's so rough I quite like it

The Queens have an unusually wide crown

And finally - the big problem with this set - the Knights look like they were designed and carved by children from the local Nursery School:

Nice, hefty pieces. How carelessly some people threw their nice chessmen into a box.

[Speaking of careless, you should clean up a bit under your table ]

Yes they are big, doesn't really come across in the pics how big these are. I will need a board with 3 inch squares at least for this. Possibly longer arms too.

Longer arms would also come in handy for picking up the socks and beer mat from under the coffee table

No it's not the same set that had all the cracks in the ebony pieces. I was planning on fixing this set up when I feel I have the expertise though. The big problem with this set is that 3 of the Knights have lost their faces, and the other one (pictured above) looks awful. So I could either try to make the other 3 look like this one, or else cut the face off this one and try to make them all look a bit more Jaques like.

The only reason that I would do the former is if someone points out that this set has some huge historical significance.

Hi, I'm not selling it - I just wanted to see if anyone recognised the set
