Black Friday Hopes?

Has anyone been holding out for anything special this Black Friday? Personally, I've been hoping for a big sale on "Keep it Simple: 1. e4" over at Chessable and a big discount at The Chess Empire for another Chavet B210 reproduction. The first already arrived this week at a big 40%+ pre-Black Friday sale so I'm 1 for 2 and still 🤞for The Chess Empire.

I was hoping for a better sale at Chessable.

Two weeks ago a couple of my wishlist courses were much cheaper. I should have bought back then. Any idea if the prices get lower closer to Black Friday?

I don't recall it getting lower, but who knows, Chessable seems to mix it up over time. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  I was definitely surprised to see that their pre-Black Friday sale was better for my wishlist than the actual Black Friday sale (currently) is. Perhaps they're trying to keep us on our toes to keep us second-guessing and buying things early. wink.png

I'd like a Chess House deal on JLP boards. I'd say House of Staunton, but the things on my wishlist there are still out of stock (and have been for months).

@MCH818 Well, HoS Camaratta "Collection" Cooke Luxury are still available here.  These have Camaratta style knights with 3.75" King and priced $100 less than "Signature" version. I have their regular Cooke Luxury with Jaques of London 1849 style knights with 3.65" King. It's a beautifully crafted set and I only play it when I have guests at home. But I assume you prefer the Camaratta style knights, not Jaques of London.  Either way, hope you find what you want for the holidays.

My hope is that no one has really great deals because I am weak and I do not want to be tempted.

Bad enough @Powderdigit forced me to buy that last set I bought ... wink.png

+1 I really want the HoS Camaratta Signature Cooke Luxury set. It has been out of stock for a year. I doubt it will ever come back in stock but I still hope for it.

⬆️ This. Camaratta Signature Cooke Luxury set on my Wishlist.

Ha! @Rsava - that made me smile…you are too easily influenced good man but I hope that you’re enjoying the said set? I look forward to photos when you have time  but I know you’re very busy too - so just when you get a chance.

Back to this thread … and let me be a little cryptic. Post #111 in @Walterbeinsur ‘s Chavet No.8 thread indicates the style of my next purchase and it is not Chavet ?? … but it will be of French influence.

Fine folk like Holger (EfimLG47) and others have influenced my thinking. My next set will not be Staunton-like. It will be a copy of a historical set, a beautiful display set - figural but still playable …for slow games …

… my ‘hope’ is that the set arrives as ‘advertised’ on the site of the retailer … which can be a lottery these days.

I’m hoping Forwardchess sends out a good coupon or has a sale.

Is it just me or does it seem awfully quiet this year?

Avatar of jsto

Yes, it is surprisingly quiet. I was hoping for a discount on JLP boards or their chess table.

Could it be that the (continuing?) sales increase following The Queen's Gambit (a year ago now!) has convinced vendors they don't need special Black Friday events this year?  Hm.

There's a really nice JLP Queen Anne 21" board right now in the ChessHouse clearance section for over half off. Scratch and Dent. (Board #1) $399 - $210 = $189 asking price. If you use the Make an Offer button and go down another 15%... $160(maybe?), they might take it.

The damage on Board #2 looks a bit more severe with chip out. But with some miniwax sticks. It might look hardly noticeable.

Oh, I hadn't noticed that. Thank you! For that price, even with the imperfection, it's a killer deal, and I would feel less bad about bringing this board around a bit more than my full price JLP I already own.

I was new to the hobby last year and so I cannot make comparisons in previous years.

What I will say is that I don’t know how a retailer such as chess bazaar could offer deeper discounts … their business model seems to rely on deep discounts year round - more likely they drop conditions such as 40% off over $299 become 40% off on all / which is what they seem to have done … but … stock is limited.

Other retailers might make one-off deeper discounts…but seem not to have.
In a market where it seems demand outweighs supply - why would they?

I imagine things might rebalance in future when supply is again strong…. But who knows?

I have made a little purchase - one that may divide opinion but a review of that will occur in due course. It may take a while to come …

Have you subscribed to them in some way and what are you hoping to get with discount ? Just curious interested too.

@light would you mind sharing the price you paid for your mom clock? I love that style, beautiful. Eventually id like to get one but as you say they could cost quite a bit.
