Book on pawn structures

Hi All,

I am currently reading Alexander Baburin's "Winning Pawn Structures", which I am finding a very enjoyable read. But it only covers the isolani, so I was wondering if any of you out there had knowledge of other books on pawn structures that are worth a read?

I thank you in advance!

Hi

Take a look at

Understanding Pawn Play In Chess and Dynamic Pawn Play In Chess by Marovi.

The first one is split up in chapters with isolated pawns, isolated pawn couples and hanging pawns, passed pawns, doubled pawns, backward pawns, pawn-chains and pawn islands, providing a lot of good games to learn from.

Dynamic is split up in chapters with the open centre, closed centre, pawn majorities and minoritiy attacks and dynamic centre.

Another related book is Pawn Structure Chess by Soltis. This book is more about planning is the different structures that you see in different openings.
The best example what this book is about, you can see in the nice example by

Cool and synthetic answer. This is still useful.

Thank you.

The book http://www.qualitychess.co.uk/products/2/235/chess_structures_-_a_grandmaster_guide_by_mauricio_flores_rios/ is also very nice.

It seems like there are only a few books and DVDs devoted to this subject, such as those listed above, and a few more by Soltis, Baburin, and Kmoch; and then there is one book I know of that is completely dedicated to the Carlsbad structure.  I think there is only one Fritz Trainer devoted to the topic.  What else is there?  A quick search on Google didn't yield much more.  Are there dated books on the topic, or maybe DVDs and software I don't know about.

Check out John Hartmann's professional book reviews. His July 2016 has a great review about one of those books available on pawn structures.  Here is the link.

Thanks, Wiscmike.

I have both of the Marovic books, I can highly recommend them.  They're not really "beginner" level books, but nothing on Pawn structure really is. happy.png

Chess Structures - A Grandmaster Guide by GM Mauricio Flores Rios (2015)

"There is also masses of stuff in the book that made me go 'Oooh!' and 'Aaah!' so I think it will have the same effect on you! In particular, I loved Rios' exposition of White's plan of exerting queenside pressure against Hedgehog systems. I'd seen one of the games he quotes in his chapter but I'd never remotely made any link to a structured way of fighting the Hedgehog structure, so this chapter was a real eye-opener for me ...

In conclusion, warmly recommended. Lots to learn!" - GM Matthew Sadler

The Power of Pawns by GM Jörg Hickl (2016)

"The didactic concept of the book is admirable. Each chapter defines the structures, explains the typical characteristics and shows the plans for both White and Black. The reader participates by assessing positions and invariably receives useful tips for practical play." - FM Harry Schaack

The classic, introduction to pawn play.  Written in descriptive notation, employs quirky, but apt, terminology to describe structures and concepts, but still the best book to begin with on the topic...
