Pandolfini’s Ultimate Guide to Chess and the Complete Idiot’s Guide to Chess. Don’t be put off by the title of the second book, it’s actually more advanced than Pandolfini’s book.

The latest edition of the Idiots Guide to Chess by Wolff has been rebranded as “Learn to Play Chess Like a Boss”. Excellent book.

Agree with Wolff's book, I've used the original edition.  Also good is Simple Chess by Stean . Be careful as there is another book of the same name by another author. Any of Dan Heisman's books would be useful. I have several.  For openings a good overview is Understanding the Chess Openings by Sam Collins. Unfortunately this is out-of-print, but is available in Kindle format. I like Pandolfini's Endgame Course as it gives names to many maneuvers, like the underpass . It has a great many typographical errors, but you can find a list of the corrections online. Also you have to supplement it with a more comprehensive work like Fundamental Chess Endings by Muller & Lamprecht.

I like Pandolfini's Weapons of Chess.

I second Weapon's of chess. It's a great book that introduces a lot of topics a 1000+ player should know, and it is also massively inexpensive.
