Are there any good instructive books that don’t require playing through moves in order to read them?

Pandolfini’s “Weapons of Chess”. It’s a very basic book on chess strategy

The only books that come immediately to mind that have no notation are Weapons of Chess by Bruce Pandolfini  - a sort of encyclopedia of positional-strategic concepts and techniques for intermediate (1300-1600) level players, and Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess - basic tactics primarily involving mating scenarios for beginners.  Also Alpha Teach Yourself Chess In 24 Hours by ZsuZsa (Susan) Polgar - an introductory chess book for beginner-novice players where notation is used, but there is a diagram for virtually every move.  And of course there are many tactics puzzle books where you work through a puzzle without looking at the moves (text) ahead of time.
