Just re-read this. The pieces shown are original, not reproduction! They are in such great condition they don't look like they have been out of the box for 100 years+.

They have that old smell too, you know, the same smell when you enter a really old establishment. :-)
This is just magnificent: https://chessantiques.com/product/british-chess-company-staunton-chessmen-2/

I recently acquired a small BCC set, 72mm Kings. I'm eBaying this soon and it would be helpful if anyone could tell me the approximate year of manufacture?

Thats a nice set Matt , These's sets are rarer than Jaques , As for details on the set , email Tim ! he might even buy it from you

@IpswichMatt, this is a beautiful set you have there, probably late 1890s. It is a Staunton set, but - slightly unusual - with Cavalier knights. Jon Crumiller has a similar set in his collection, see here. Jon's set is mentioned in Mick Deasey / Guy Lyons, "The British Chess Company - Stroud and London", p. 18, Fig. 21a.

Thanks lighthouse and EfimLG! That pic does look similar, probably bigger than mine though which has 72mm Kings
I stuck it on eBay last night, it's here:

I'm selling a lot of my chess sets and other stuff

Jon's set is a No. 5S with 75mm Kings.

I love those spikey crowns on the queens. For some reason, that's a big thing for me. Whenever I see a chess set I really like when I come to the queen and her crown is just rounded I let out a sigh...

Hey Michael,
Your comment made me smile at a memory. The first set I purchased was in part because of the queen’s double crown with double spikes (photo above) …. Perhaps folk may find the design strange but I liked it and still do.
Downloaded from google photos, copied across to iMac photos, uploaded one at a time! It might be an age thing but I am sure there must be a quicker way to do this. BCC Staunton Club c 1901/2. 4" Kings, weighted.Note that both black and white knights are xylonite.
What a gorgeous set! IMHO, BCC reproductions do quite get the knights. I prefer the antique BCC over Jaques just because there's already a ton of fantastic Jaques reproduction.
