In order to find some chess sets that may be associated with Capablanca—or at the very least used by him—I spent some time collecting photos from historical matches. Does anyone recognize any of the sets?
1913 Savorin Cup
Featuring Alekhine, Duz-Chotimirski, and Znosko-Borovsky. Capablanca played all three and had to win 2 games each in order to win the cup; he won 5 games, and lost one game against Znosko-Borovsky, who was ironically declared the winner.
1921 World Chess Championship
Capablanca won against Lasker.
1922 International Chess Tournament London
Capablanca came ahead of Alekhine, Vidmar, and Rubinstein.
1922 Simultaneous Exhibition Cleveland
Capablanca played against 103 opponents simultaneously—winning 102, and drawing one.
1927 Chess Tournament New York
Match against Alekhine, which Capablanca won.
World Chess Championship 1927 (Buenos Aires)
Capablanca lost against Alekhine.
This chess set looks like an Austrian coffee house set. Does anyone recognize the approximate style based on the knights? I’m not entirely sure if this is even a photo from the Championship in Buenos Aires though. An Austrian coffee house set seems such an odd choice for use in Buenos Aires.
Where is this photo from?
I haven’t been able to find where this photo is from and when, but it’s the second chess set I actually recognize; it seems to be a Lardy set! Does anyone recognize what type of Lardy it is?
