Chavet ... well almost ...

Hi All - I just received this set from a friend in Germany. It was purchased new there and is as close as I can find to the Chavet set used in the K v. K matches of the late '80's / early '90's and Intel Grand Prix. The King is just over 4" and the Rooks, Bishops and pawns look identical to the Chavet set. The German knights have longer snouts and forked ears. Not sure of the wood. It is weighted but not overly so (which I prefer). Any ideas on the maker? Definitely made for tournament play. My friend said he bought it when the country was still 'West Germany'. Hope you like it. Also the board didn't come with it but it IS the original case. I am determined to find an original Chavet No 6 but this will satifsy me for now. Thanks for looking Laughing

Ron, this is a fabulous set, congratulations. I like this set even better than the Chavet sets. The Knights are fantastic!

Thanks Mike Laughing. I was told to check out the Didatto sets from Italy and there is a resemblance. But the knights in the Didatto sets are a little more stubby and hunched forward at the top. These knights are more laid back . I really like the little extras like the nostrils and manes carved into the sides as well. The big paddle finnials on the Kings are definitely not a Chavet trait either. But the Rooks and Bishops scream Chavet . Cheers -Ron

Thanks Laughing. I plan on adding a few more pics to the post in the AM with a board more befitting its quality. I think my DGT board will pair well with it. Stay Tuned Wink

The set looks really great. In Italy besidesd Didatto similar sets were produces by a company called Dal Negro:

www.dalnegro.com/

they still make some chess sets, but much less than in the past. You may want to check it out.

this is the most similar one in the range of products that they are offering now, they used to have many more:

Good looking set, Ron! Thanks for the pics and happy hunting.

Dalnegro makes nice chess sets. I have one of their plastic sets that looks like wood. USCF used to sell them but, dropped them from their catalog.

Here are some pics on my DGT board which I think highlights it well. Cheers -Ron

I still can buy a Chavet set number 6 in my town (Antwerp - Belgium). It is altough unweighted and has no felt.

The set in that ad looks like the number 5 and the measurements are for the 5 as well. I have a 5 and the King is barely 3.6 inches. I believe the 6 has at least a 3.75 or 4 inch King.

this is the later Chevet design. Small but noticable differences. I  believe Ron is looking for a chavet from the 90s (different cross on the King, smaller bump on queen's coronet, slightly different bishop).

One more interesting thing is the box clasp has ' Ges Gesch Germany' engraved under it. Hmm

Couldn't resist and bought the  Chavet number 6 (unweighted and unfelted). Ronbo710 ... you're right: the king of number 6 is 9.2 cm (3.6 inches)and 3.8 cm (1.49 inches) broad.

The first pictures show the difference between number 5 and 6

I think chess knights should be carved so the hair appears to be blowing in the wind.
