I own several Chavet sets but I am no expert But I can say I have never seen a Chavet form like that. The set also looks newer than the box. I have two of those boxes and the Chavet sets in them were from early to mid '90's.
Chavet set?

I own several Chavet sets as well, and I agree w/ Ron. The box is early 90s Chavet, the set looks like an Indian set.

That's what I thought. Not a bad looking set really but not a Chavet. I guess since Chavet sets have gone through the roof, there's the hope that anything in a Chavet box can bring a premium price!

You can stille buy a "modern" Chavet set:

Staunton Castle has a very nice reproduction of the Chavet chess set used in tournaments in the 1980s and 1990s, and all of the FIDE and PCA World Championship matches from 1990 through 1995, that differs from the originals seemingly only very slightly in the relative heights of the kings and queens, and is currently on sale for all of $71.99.

Please do post photos, UthorP! I'm still not sure if what I've turned up is a genuine Chavet but seems close. There appear to be slight differences, particularly in the way the mane-cuts are made on the knights, in pictures I've seen of older sets. I'm wondering if there may have been some minor variations among the sets that were used for major competition in the 90's.
I have posted pictures on threads here directly comparing Chavet to the Staunton Castle and Chessbazaar reproductions. I presume its not the set that Chessopera mentions above that you’re referring to but the one that sold yesterday

Yes, I've looked closely at that thread. The set I bought is from the mid-90's and wasn't identified as a Chavet. It looked right though so I took a chance on it. Hopefully it will get here soon!

That photo of the knight and rook are definitely vintage chavet. So if the size is right then it is genuine.

No size was given but it was on a 55cm board and looked right so I chanced it. I figure it's a lovely set anyway so even if it's smaller, it's nice to have.

If that’s a 55cm board then it is probably at least a size 6 but may be bigger. Please post photos when you get it. Cheers!

Congrats looks like a nice score !!

The set arrived today! In beautiful shape despite some iffy packaging. The box doesn't say Chavet but the pieces do. It was originally purchased at Fortnum and Mason in London in 1996 so my guess is that Chavet produced some sets for them to sell as their own. The only defects are protruding weights on a few pieces, most annoyingly on the black king. A small compromise to make since the board (which was also part of the original purchase in '96) came with it. 55cm board with 55mm squares. It was listed only as "Staunton chess set & board, solid wood". If it had mentioned Chavet on the box or listing, I wouldn't have ended up with it since I can't afford the inflated prices that the sets seem to bring lately. Now to fix those offending weights.
The box is Chavet but is the set? I don't know if Chavet ever produced or sold pieces in this style. Any opinions/ideas?
