Sorry I took so long to post!

Great comparison shots happy.png . I'm just happy to have a couple of the vintage #6 size Chavet sets and the Ref. 212 larger set. As far as price escalation goes I see it as vindication for having a great eye when it comes to design wink.png . It took me 20 years to find mine lol.

What’s sad is, I know of several cases, where people have asked very talented Indian manufacturers, to make them a good Chavet reproduction, but for some reason they never get it right.

I think that’s probably because they use the “german knight” set templates and try to adapt them slightly rather than start from scratch and try to copy the set which would be a lot more expensive.

Chessopera is lying and wrong!

He also is a fraud and a fake.

Everyone should quit paying attention to anything he writes.

FIDE has NOT recommended the German Knight.  This guy is wacko!

BeyondDuplication - The more I look at your pictures the more impressed I am by the colors/contrast of the board to the pieces. Almost as if the board was made for that set. Great find.

My Chavet set from Dal Negro Italy, I bought maybe in 1992 or 1993
I like it very much but unfortunately don't have double Queens

Very Nice! One of the easiest sets to play with. Perfect size and weight. Personally would use this over a Jaques every time. MHO of course, most would probably disagree. 😉

Wonderful example happy.png . I have noticed that many vintage Chavet #6 sets didn't have Chavet marked boxes. I have three sets from a chess club in Europe that had plain boxes and the German style clasp (No Ges.Gesch clasp marking though) but they are definitely vintage Chavet #6 sets.

OK Ron. Rub it in. By the way did original sets have extra queens?

Not to my knowledge. But you do see them with the sets used in the Intel Grand Prix videos.

Hello chess Friends :-)

"I have noticed that many vintage Chavet #6 sets didn't have Chavet marked boxes."

I have noticed that queens are slightly different in the 1990s Chavet.

For me they are perfect with this head:

If someone has such a model, or knows where to buy it, I am able to pay a good price.

No vintage Chavet or Lardy set ever had extra queens. Extra queens were unheard of until introduced by Frank Camaratta in the 1990's. Its only in the last 25 years that including double queens in sets has become a custom. Many manufacturers still don't include them today.

I knew that. It was more of a question to Ron as an expert on Chavet. I am familiar with Lardy since I have bought and sold about every set they produced. I know all about Frank. I have dealt with him a few times. As a matter of fact I stumbled into one of his first 2 queen sets at auction.

Me an "expert" LOL hardly. I just read and search that's all. But I do remember they had the extra queen's sitting next to the boards in the Intel Grand Prix videos from the mid 1990's. Just taken from other sets no doubt.

Come on we know you are the Chavet guru here. Actually it is a valid question because when did Morize stop making them?

Chavet still make chess sets. You can buy a size 5 online still. Their catalogue still shows a size 6 set but I don't think that is available anymore. They changed the design of their pieces around the turn of the century. The new design is nowhere near as pleasing as the vintage Chavet from c1990s.

There was a post where a member gave a piece by piece comparison of 1990s v 2000s pieces but I can't fimd it now.

Thanks Frank. I knew it was you who did the comparison and that the name Chavet didn't appear in the title of the thread but I couldn't remember what keyword would lead me to it. The keyword was "Lyons"!

"...a strange fairy tale titled “Chavvot” where a young boy named Jimmy sees Chavvot playing outside in the snow. Jimmy tries to talk to Chavvot, but she is deaf, and merely smiles back. Jimmy goes outside and, despite Chavvot being deaf, they can communicate with smiles and gestures and find happiness despite the barrier. One site notes that this is not an original story but a Russian tale.

Apparently Chavvot was based in an old Russian legend about a man and a woman. The man’s name is Death and the woman’s name is Life:

Death falls for Life and constantly calls out to her but because of the realms dividing them and their differences Life cannot hear Death. One day, Death stumbles upon a frozen boy in a pitfall. Instead of taking of the boy’s life he spares the child, and it is then when Life appears before them, finally able to hear Death. Together they revive the boy, with Death promising only to take the boy when his time naturally comes to die. Life and Death fall in love and eventually have a child named Hope who mediates and judges who goes where. “For even in life and death, hope can arise in both situations.”
