Chavet set found ...

Hi All - I received this one today from England (Thanks Andy Laughing) It is a vintage Chavet set with 4" plus Kings ! The Knights, Rooks and Bishops are similar to the other vintage Chavet sets but the Queen has a sphere on top. This is NOT like the modern "nipple" top Queen of the current set. Though I still do prefer the flat top Queens of olde. This is weighted and felted (thinning). In fact there is a lot of felt residue in the box lol. I am just happy to have found the full size Chavet vintage knights I have been searching for for 20 YEARS Surprised . I will take some  pics of the pieces next to the current Chavet #6 set on my days off. Thanks for looking all . Happy Holidays Smile

Perhaps because these " less than stellar" pieces were made by the same company that made the World Championship set used by Kasparov v. Karpov lol. Small companies like Chavet and NoJ make World Class Chess pieces and are as good (if not better) than any pieces made in America. AND there's a lot more chess history in their pieces. And this comes from an American.

why did you buy these less than stellar foreign chess pieces, if you could have had nice american ones?

(btw, my friend produces chess sets too, they are made in india of course, to cut labour expenses. smart guy).

on a more serious note, are thos the pieces you are looking for by any chance?

Yes that appears to be the vintage Chavet set. I haven't seen pictures of one used in a tournament setting in ages.

I like the queen with that nipple much better. Which of them is the original?

I believe the earlier ones have the the flatter top Queens. They are all original Chavet sets however.

That flat crown on the Queen reminds me a bit of the Queen on the Spanish set although they have a very different cut.

Following your example i just bought one without nipple, although that nipple makes it extra beautiful i must admit! I will post some pics when it arrives.

Here's the current Chavet #6 queen (left) next to my vintage Chavet queen. Too bad they don't have the much larger sets available anymore.

Hi. Ronbo710, you seem to be the expert on this subject. I wanna ask you, so what is finally a oroginal design of Kasparo-Karpov 1990 Lyon set? The one on these pictures?

Yes that is the one. Congrats on your find. I have been searching for that set forever. Undecided
