@ungewichtet thanks! - I love that you picked out the spinach bowl!! all 4 of them have been through a lot of battles. I'll post some more pics tomorrow when daylight permits happy.png Its the smallest vs the largest (12cm king) set Chavet ever produced (as far as I'm aware).

Awesome! Where is it available?

Eighwan

Bought this off eBay a couple of years ago. Think I paid £13 for it

Sorry don't know how pic is upside down.

What is the size of those squares?

They're vintage - it's the only set of this size I've ever seen. Looking at the patina they are quite old as well (50s/60s I guess). Chavet is out of business, and there hasn't been anything produced this size anymore for quite a while. You will have to hunt on Ebay/Etsy.

Walterbiensur

Chavet still exists and the manufacture of sets in sizes 0, 3 and 5 is in progress.

This sort of knight dates, for the first ones, from the beginning of the 80s. It did not exist before that date ;-)

Or with Yalta set in size 1 Morize = Chavet

I like the idea of 3 colours. Perhaps I'll need a red board.

Are you saying size Morize 1 = Chavet 0? I'm looking for details on this.

Walterbiensur

I wanted to say that Chavet and Morize are closely linked. The majority of wooden games sold by Morize come from Chavet. The Yalta game is an example in size 1. Morize was more into the manufacturing of plastic games.

Possible to find size 1 felted and weighted, or size 2 with an older box (rare) ;-)

Thank you. The reason I like Chavet size 0 is because I'm considering a Chessnut Air board. This uses 35 mm squares. I like that this size board I can use this on my desk easily. I can purchase the Chessnut sensors and modify the set.

I'm in love with the swirl grain of the Jura wood. I can't believe people would consider a reproduction that doesn't use Jura wood.

It adds a lot to the character of the pieces for sure! Also, they always get the knights wrong in the reproductions..

Is it the Chavet Knight that people call the German Knight (even though Chavet is made in France)?

Walterbiensur

The German knight appeared after this Chavet knight. Based on what I have read on various forums.

I see two or three other knights which are also in one piece which also date from the 70s, and which were made in France:
1) The Parisian knight of Lardy
2) Knight Lambert
3) Another Chavet knight

3 cm made the board during lock down.

Well done! Thanks for confirmation. 35 mm squares is my desired board and I think they will be perfect for Chavet 0. Can you confirm that's Chavet 0 in the pic as well?

Eighwan

A couple more pics might confirm.

chesslover0003

Thank you. I'm even more convinced the Chavet 101/0 is what I want for 35 mm. I hope they start making them again soon. I understand these are unfelted and unweighted which is perfect.

Hi folk of the forum. I am looking to draw on your collective wisdom regarding this local find. For context - I have had numerous small sets (mainly dogface knights with kings at 6cm). I’ve sold them off because they are too small and too light - just not practical for my needs. I was taken my this set because of the beautiful Chavet-type knights and the fact that the magnets would act like weights - so without a board it’s simply a weighted small set with a king height of 5.5cm and base of 2cm. Problem is — that’s smaller that Chavet size 0!

I am very confident these are of European origin, probably France or Germany and vintage from 80’s or perhaps ‘70.

That said, somewhere in their history / pieces became mixed - look at the subtle variation in king, queen and bishops and yet the pawns, knight and rooks are the same, I think.

I plan to felt the bases and find a vintage small board at another time. In the meantime, I’ll enjoy this lovely small set. As usual, any insights you have will be appreciated. 👍
