That green Chavet set is like an old friend. I always enjoy seeing it again. 🥰

You always have such great fun... (it is what I like to call the "combination effect" in chess--pairs well with _______) The proprietors of this Wine Bar must agree that you all were "classing up the joint?!" Better than shootin' craps in the corner, not that dice games are bad or anything. wink Your posts always help me get my weekend off to a smiling start!

Kudos to you and your Pal from afar, Mark, nice work.

I am glad people enjoy this thread and I hope it helps get more people playing their games out and about. It is fun and it does bring people together. It’s an added bonus to be able to take all sorts of pieces and boards out too. These Chavets aren’t just my favourites - others are attracted to them anytime I bring them out.
PS - as an aside, I read a news article today that some of our AFL players were enjoying the game of chess now too - great to read! If anyone hasn’t seen Australian Rules Football - it’s a popular game in this country but I imagine it looks rather crazy to newcomers… 😉😊

Was able to beat the midday heat with double chess sets at a local brewpub with attached (soccer themed) sports bar. It was early enough before the Euro Final that it was mostly empty. I was lucky to get one taker in Son-Father duo on a college tour visit--once Dad had his second beverage, he was properly lubricated to challenge me:

Both sets were the Amazon Deal Lardy's (the 2nd round of their deal) that @Yenster1 alerted us all to (thanks again). They get to go out and about, while the slightly heavier and larger "OG" set stays home. I also drew inspiration from various Forum users to cut off the coordinates on twin vinyl boards (since they can stand up to a soaking). Additional BONUS: we don't need to constantly rotate the boards. Only one piece hit the floor, but all was good.

thumbup An efficient early afternoon at another Local! thumbup

Thanks for posting. Wonderful to see! With the Euro final on right now - I am guessing there’s no room for chess now! People would be crammed in to watch their respective teams. 👍

I've had a couple of my pieces drop onto a concrete floor and I didn't even worry about them, though I'm sure it's not good practice. But, admittedly, more pieces seem to hit the floor at pubs for some reason wink.

For some reason. happy

Some strange and unknown reason.

We should do an investigation. Should be able to figure it out with, oh, say 6 months of pub visits.

Yenster1

Investigation indeed wink. And I've already found a clue @Rsava ... Nikolajs was there!

😆… it seems to me that the more time I spend at the pub … my confidence grows, my skills decline (which are already poor!) and my fingers become clumsier … and we all laugh a tad more too … I’ll do more investigation next week.🤔😉

Thank you for your dedication to solving this mystery, Mark.

The chess world is grateful. tongue

😆 If only all research was so enjoyable!

Friday eve and another wine bar. Here with a vintage board and Vienna coffee house pieces - a combination befitting a stylish bar.

Nice little evening out.

Would love to share a game and a drink with you Mark, you always seem to find a nice little spot to have a relaxing chess evening.

DelphinSnow

Beautiful set and board. 😍 And the food looks delicious.

Good you ran into that fork

Good song, and knowing your penchant for black pieces, I can appreciate that many of my sets make you feel a tad green … 🤢🤮 …I’ve got a few black sets but a number are a bit too large to easily take to the pub (with a bigger board) but I’ll try to get more out and about in future.

I like the song, too, it's about funerals and new borns. Jagger referred to it as 'Turkish'. Erkin Koray's 1966 'Bir Eylül Aksami' is given as a reference in a wiki. That song bears a few similarities, alright, but the artist is interesting by himself. Nice sound, great carrying over of the traditional Turkish folk song into forms of those days. Now, desperate may say he could not play chess to this, Vienna coffeehouse or diner happy.png But I just love it, so:

The song adresses Cemal, who fled his home town on horseback, as people there want to kill him; singing to him, the singer supports him.

What I like about chess is the call 'check', which, in poor style, we have dropped from the international rules. Ín German, check is 'Schach', which is a form of shah. So whenever we say check we are greeting the opposing shah happy.png

A public library, museum, with musical happenings, and a garden with toys and table tennis: Before it poured, we took the board from down on the grass inside, where this old Russian chess set landed like a unique foreign oldie, in stark contrast to the plastic lampshades and flower pots, and turquoise sofas that let you sit straight. Shakhmaty!

A lovely location and set. I hope you enjoyed the game 👍.

The Schlussbild, the final position, is beautiful.. the last couple of moves were Bb5-e8#, Kg5-h5, Rf8-g8+, c2-c4? I am playing a friend who learns to play, giving odds of several pieces. He told me how counterintuitive it seemed to him that he could not take the knight f5 with either his king or his queen after the rook check. And it's true, why can't we leave or put our king en prise if we could take the opposing king as well if our king were taken? I offered, the king is the piece that stands in for all other pieces and no king is going down in no game of chess happy.png Arguably, it is going down in a checkmate. But checkmate is also the well balanced moment of 'close enough for a final greeting yet untakeable because it's no longer anybody's turn'.
