Would you consider the faux leather base to be unsuitable for a wooden board? This is one of the sets I've been considering myself.
It was only 3 days ago that I decided to buy this set from Chess Bazaar.
It is the Fierce Knight Staunton Series Wooden Weighted Chess Pieces in Bud Rose & Box Wood - 3.0" King.
It lists for $77.59 however they have a 25% off sale going on now for Chess sets so my cost was only $58.19, delivered.
Well, on Friday I received an email saying that my set was shipped and would arrive today, Sunday. It seems that Chess Bazaar sells sets on Amazon and had Amazon ship the set to me from here in the USA. Amazon has a deal with the US Postal Service to deliver packages for them and they also deliver on Sundays and some holidays.
So, when I got home just awhile ago, my set was in my mailbox, pretty good.
I decided to give this set and Chess Bazaar its own topic title.
It's late and I don't want to try to take pictures so here are a couple from the Chess Bazaar website:
The set is quite nice, especially for such a low price for bud rosewood.
The bottoms are a faux leather, which seems to be some kind of vinyl at the look of it. But this is not a problem as I will mostly be using this set for personal analysis on either a vinyl 1.875" square board or a linen 1.75" folding board.
The pieces are actually nicely weighted and feel good in the hand when moving them on the board.
The detailing of the workmanship is also very nice, especially compared to other sets of the same size. I say this because I actually own another of this size category from the Rochester Chess Center and this one is much nicer.
The main thing that is noticeable about this set, to me, is how nice and broad the bases are. There is really no concern with this set having pieces easily tip over.
I also really like the design and workmanship of the pieces, especially the King and Rook.
I think that CB might have the best offering in this category of 3.0" King and under $90.
