If a total beginner, I like "Chess in a Nutshell" by Reinfeld.  Then....

1. Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess (Fischer)

2. Logical Chess Move by Move (Chernev)

3. Winning Chess - How to See Three Moves Ahead (Chernev)

4. How to Win in the Chess Endings (Horowitz)
