John A. Bain's Chess Tactics for Students. Recommended you do the chapters over and over until the fabled pattern recognition kicks in, although of course in the beginning you'll have to figure them out. Coach Heisman loves this book!
Chess books for beginners - 200 to 400 rating in rapid games

Thank you so much for the recommendation. I also found '1001 chess exercises for beginners', looks pretty fine as well.

It's not that hard to find great books to study. Try not to fall into the trap of becoming a chess book collector though, and remember chess books aren't meant to be read; they're meant to be studied...

I liked tactics time vol 1 and 2 by Tim Brennan as they have a lot of tactics that happen occur in amateur games. They read well on kindle so cheap too.

Siegbert Tarrasch (The Game of Chess) and Capablanca (A Primer of Chess, Chess Fundamentals), two of the strongest players ever, have written books aimed at beginners. Not only tactics but elements of positional play and basic endgame techniques are explained insimple language.

I found 'Chess for Dummies' and 'Chess Openings for Dummies' by James Eade quite helpful.
Chess for Dummies starts out pretty elemental but expands into tactics, recognizing patterns, and principles of openings, middle & end game. Openings is self descriptive and written in the same 'friendly' manner. Despite the titles neither are patronizing. Worth a look
