Chess Clocks

I once had a Solora chess clock. It was a lovely thing.
I just picked one up. Frank Camaratta's personal clock.
Nice clock Cgrau I was trying to buy that same clock same time as you. Frank emailed me saying that it was sold so it was you! At the end pretty happy how it went because the one i got doesn't have Frank's artwork on the bottom. On that note I hope his chess was better than his artwork btw
LOL. I love the "artwork." It adds an additional level of historic interest for me and establishes this clock's pedigree and relation to a significant figure in American chess. The initials on the front, however, came off easily with a little baking soda paste. The clock is in fantastic shape, and after a little tune-up by my local clock repairman, seems to run perfectly.
I wonder what his motivation was for those doodles. kinda misterious indeed . Yes i worried about the initials but glad they came out. The one i bought from Dortland was like new as well.
The artwork/doodles on the bottom are obviously of a mailbox, with its flag raised and several letters sticking out of its opening. R.F.D. = Rural Free Delivery. Perhaps Frank was once a mailman, or associated with the Postal Service?

Very nice, I hope you receive a good bid if you're the owner

Anyone has more info on this Jerger Chess Champion chess clock? All I can find is that this one was built as a cheaper version of the wooden one. I wonder if it has the same movement as the expensive sibling?
It's quite cumbersome to bring my wooden chess clock along to play OTB, so I thought I'm gonna get a plastic one. This one is on the way now.
edit: I shouldn't make an offer and forget about it. Just got a message it got accepted. I totally forgot about it, so a plastic Jantar clock is on the way too now lol

Cheers mister Giuoco, I love for the small size of it and now I have the wooden version too. You're right, they're very nice old school clocks.

I still have my MOM clock that I got when I was a kid almost 50 years ago. It still works perfectly.
Over the years I've also had Jerger, Solara, and BHB clocks, but I've sold them all and just kept the MOM. The giant, plain clock face just makes it so easy to see the time left easily, even from a distance if you're walking around. That's what I like about analog clocks, for long time controls in an OTB event, I find it easier to visualize what percentage of time I've used without having to do any arithmetic. Digital is better for blitz, though, of course.

Loving this hybrid clock concept.

It’s an interesting combination. Just ordered one on Kickstarter.

A 1950s Omikron chess clock just popped up on everyone's favorite online auction site. My left eyebrow twitched up a few millimeters the moment I saw it. The wood is stunning.

Beautiful wood for sure! Thank you the photos. On a side note, does anyone know of a maker of the guts that can be purchased for someone to make their own “cabinet” themselves?

@Wits-end, before the advent of purpose-made chess clocks, many people made their own out of alarm clock or pocket watch movements. If you don’t want to go that route, buy an inexpensive new analog clock and take the guts out of it. Such as this one…

@Madmacsback, i had considered that and your suggestion pushed me over the edge. It will be here March 2nd. Time to take a break from flute making and begin a clock project. I appreciate your reply my friend! Now, what type of wood…..

Hi all,
I have just picked up a couple of BHB chess clocks that I think are around 50+ years old - based on what seller noted. Does anyone have anything more specific to add about their age or provenance based on the following photos? A couple of things I find interesting:
The BHB logo is widely space not tightly grounded like the modern logo.
The red flags are straight not star shaped like on some models.
The back has the same shape but slight different elements.
The ‘plastic’ is black - mottled under light - could it be Bakelite?
The edges are rounds - not straight like more modern clocks.
Based on my internet searching - I think the clocks are more likely 1950’s than 1970’s… in the end, I don’t mind - I’m just interested.
I’d love any thoughts from folk with more knowledge. Thanks in advance.

cgrau: If I may be so crass, what did you pay for Frank's Solora?
It's list price, just a shade under $300.
Regular price for a Solora got mine a bit above that price as well.
