SCID vs. PC launch error

I'd almost be willing to bet I know the problem.

Uninstall the previous install, if you can.

Then create a new folder on C:\, something like "Program Files (64-bit custom folder)". Install the program into that folder, and it should work.

Thanks, that worked nicely!

Now I get another error when trying to open a .pgn-file:

File -> Open results in the error above, but I can open the file if I use Edit -> Paste PGN.

The file was created in Tarrasch, but I get the same error if I try to open games from websites etc. The file is not read-only.

No answer comes immediately to mind on that one. I can't duplicate the problem on my end. I'll have to mull this over, but right now I have nothing.

I guess the first thing I'd do is to try to open a known good pgn file. Here's one that I just opened in Scid vs. PC (It's the link in Post #3 regarding the Polgar pgn, named polgar_5334_fixed.7z):

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/chess-puzzles-in-pgn-format---help-please

Go ahead and download the file, unzip the 7-Zip archive, then try to read the PGN file.

OK. One thing I didn't tell you is that I'm using an old version of Scid vs. PC. So I'll install version 4.18 and give that pgn file a try again.

(I'm using Windows 7, so I hope it's not an OS related problem.)

OK, I just installed ver 4.18, and it opened the Polgar file without any problems. So, I don't think it's the program or the pgn file. At this point, I'm only guessing. Maybe something related to Windows 10? Maybe some permissions thing?

But what's puzzling is that the pgn works in Tarrasch.

Hmm, in the "News" section of the Scid vs. PC web page, I noticed this item:

July 2017

Thanks to (our best bug reporter) Ileano for finding a bug in the new Best-Games/Browser feature. I've made a 4.18.1 point release to include the fix. This version also includes a minor PGN import fix.

Note that it mentions a minor PGN import fix for ver 4.18.1, which we don't have yet. Possibly that's the missing link. Maybe send Steve Naaus an e-mail asking for more info?

In the mean time, I guess you could use the pgnscid.exe utility in the command line to manually convert a PGN file to a Scid file, then open the Scid file. (In the Scid Help file, go to "Help --> Index --> Pgnscid", and it will give detailed instructions on how to convert a pgn file to scid format.)

Oh, sorry, maybe this download IS ver 4.18.1. When you open Scid, it says that it's ver 4.18, and I even went to "Help --> About", and it said that it was "Scid vs. PC ver 4.18". However, the download file and the download link specifically state that it's ver 4.18.1.

Very confusing...

Well, to recap, I completely uninstalled my old version of Scid vs. PC, then I installed version 4.18.1 into my folder named "Program Files (64-bit custom folder)". I can open any pgn file without any problems.

I tried installing the program both from my limited user account and my administrator account, and it seemed to work OK either way. However, if you haven't tried installing the program from your administrator account, it might be worth trying. (There might be some kind of weird permissions thing going on with Windows 10.)

Yeah... problem seems related to the home directory, possibly the unicode character 'Å'

in 'Sigurd Åset'. Or some permissions problem. I've emailed Sigurd  and will try to resolve it. But funny the problem does not appear on my test systems so far.

A game called "Suika Game" being a viral hit or available in mobile browsers. It's possible that this game gained popularity after my last update, or it may be a specific title that I don't have information about.
