Chess piece storage box that is well made & reasonable

Looking for a chess storage box for my 4.4"King set that won't send me broke but looks classy and is well made.  I thought since a box is fairly simple to make & design the prices wouldn't be so sky high but I was mistaken.

My budget right now is in the range of $60 to $120. At the $120 end the box should have the wow factor, at least in my mind it should. At the low end should still be well built and very solid and do the job.  Do any boxes out there exist in this range with my expectations?  Cool

One of these may work for you. I'm not sure how sensitive your wow meter is but some of them look quite nice to me.

Never seen these guys before in all my surfing on the internet and it says they are located in the USA.  Yes they seem very reasonable especially on the leather box that takes up to a 5" set.  Do you have any experience ordering from this chess store before?

Cardwood box at your grocerystore free..!

I bought a chess set from them last year. They are easy to deal with and promptly and courteously resolved some problems with the set. I have no experience with their boxes.

[edit: Watch out for their descriptions. Some of the picture captions say leather while the full description may say leatherette. They specifically mention this discrepancy somewhere and I believe they attribute it to the descriptions their supplier send them.]

Sometimes you can find OK storage boxes cheap on Ebay.  I've picked up a couple in the $20 to $30 range that folks put together in home workshops as a hobby of sorts.  They just want to make back their costs in materials and maybe make a few bucks.

EDIT: Maybe it's more of a winter hobby thing.  Just checked and everything is commercial at the moment.

TundraMike

I like your idea baddogno maybe wait till the winter. In the mean time this guy who does custome hardwood floors in my area always had scrap exoctic hardwoods. Maybe he can make me a custome box this winter when he is slow our of the scraps.  Magnetic lid and felt line and tall enough to stand up a 4 1'2"  king would do the trick.

I will use the plastic box as the last resort this winter to keep the wood from drying out in the dry air, I alredy procured hi tech Boveda (humidpak) for guitars which will work great for an expensive wood chess set.

In terms of practicality and value for price, it's hard to beat the HoS slide top boxes. They hold a 4.4" set comfortably.

If you want something nicer looking and don't want to pay for the HoS premium boxes, try these:

I like the sets where the board folds into the box.

I own the Chopra PLB-2 fitted case from The Chess Piece (shown below). It's a great box for $109, and a perfect fit for a 4.5" set.

I only suggest it because In wiscmike's original post he mentioned that his budget was between $60-$120.

Hell, zip-loc bags are cheaper than that!

I got a wooden cigar box from a friend which I use for one of my chess sets.  I haven't lined it with felt or anything yet.

Rubbish! Easy Jet Sick Bags are the Cheapest!

Au contraire, the cheapest I found air sick bags was 20 cents a piece at SkyGeek. You can get ziplock bags for under a nickel. Of course, the bags are free if you pilfer them off the plane, but then you'd have to buy a round trip airline ticket first (unless you're planing on moving to Cleveland). When you calculate your total expense, you'll actually 'save' money buying the fitted storage case -- and you won't have to move to Cleveland!

How's that for a rational argument. But then, I don't need a reason to buy, just an excuse! As they say, "It's easier to beg forgiveness than to ask permission."

The most useful IMO. is the air tight plastic storage containers found at Walmart etc...

I know I am incredibly late on this post but I have an Etsy show where I can custom make chess piece storeage boxes for a reasonable price.  I can make it out of a wide range of different types of woods and I can even custom engrave the lid.  Use Coupon code SHOP10 to save 10%.

Here is a link to one of them:

I can say with all honesty that Brad of the BnVShop does quality work at a decent price. I bought a board off of him and it is super nice.

I have no monetary interest in his shop nor does he give him an extra discount for saying this. It is just an honest statement.

Tha cherry wood box is very nice indeed where the URL takes you to.

I myself bought the exact board you see on his page 2 next to last item called "Padauk & Maple with border" Georgeous board.  That is the picture of the board before he sent it to me. He also packs well so no damage comes of your item.

Thanks for coming on here Brad. I always told everyone that Chess Boards were an item that AMerican Craftsmen such as yourself can make for less than the foreign market and make them from solid wood.  I think the chess box will also be an item you should be able to sell a few especially when it gets close to the Holidays. I always like buying myself a present, that way I get what I want. I never used to do that buy hey I am getting old. Surprised

There is a wide selection of reasonably priced chess piece storage boxes at http://www.houseofchess.com/chess-boxes.html
I have several of the "presentation case" boxes from them and am very pleased.  At the time I ordered, there was free shipping on orders over $100 so I added another item like a magnetic travel set.  Those items have been excellent quality and value as well.  I have no ties to the seller; just impressed with the value and service.

I got a custom sized walnut box on eBay a hobbyist under 50usf

Stop by a few local cigar shops and see if they will let you buy their extra boxes. Same quality as any 'proper' chess box, and way cheaper (if not free).
