Chess set for new player

Hi All,

I've been playing online chess for about two years but have never played at a club or in a tournament. I'd like to eventually and I'd like to get a chess set and clock. There are so many different chess sets with different dimensions - what is considered the norm for taking to tournaments or chess clubs? Is it one of those vinyl board sets? Should I be looking for 2" squares and 3.75" king? Or does it matter?

Thanks!

Here is a well written explanation of this whole matter:

I have recently bought a small set of plastic pieces + rubber/vinyl board (that can be rolled-up), by "Noèse Collection". It is a chess set that comes in an elongated, small bag (mine is blue). The same as the members of my club have, and that I also saw people having during my 1st tournament quite recently.

The pieces are good (though plastic), and do not easily fall (like a previous set that I returned because of that!).

If you plan to play in tournaments then all you need is the basic plastic set with 3 3/4 King & a 2 1/4 inch vinyl board. The last time I was at a Tournament this combo was 98% in use by all players & even a 2500 player was using this combo. A couple guys brought nice wood sets & boards out of 50 players.

You should invest in a clock tht doesn't run the time out. I've noticed that when you play online and start to lose you just stall and let the seconds tick away. Not sure where you will find a chess set to make you suck less, but keep searching. I'll send you a link if one shows up.
