It was actual Rosewood that is now very difficult to get. I have some other sets in Rosewood and they get darker as well.

From the photos it looks more like ebony, i.e., black. I don't believe rosewood would darken to the extent that it turns black. I have 20+ year-old guitars with rosewood backs and sides which have not darkened to the extent that it is obvious to the casual observer.

I assure that it is Rosewood, and regular Rosewood at that.

It does look to be black in the photos. The lighting is fluorescent and the lights are a bit of distance from the pieces, giving it that look.

The pieces don’t look that dark in real life.

That set has seen a lot over the years. I have other sets of the same Rosewood from Frank. We will have to see what they look like when I bring them and take photos.

Well, tonight I used my Noj Dubrovnik Minceta set in European Maple with the dark pieces stained Brown. The board is a FlexPad board from The Chess House.

This is probably the best set for regular play.

OK! Great set...but, begs the question....How did you do?wink

Anybody knows why Noj calls their dubs as Minceta. Btw the stain looks stunning. However it looks more burgundy than brown.

@danlerner66 The Minceta design is a slight sub-variation of the Dubrovnik design. So Noj's Dubrovnik Minceta design is paying tribute to the Tower of Minceta that's within Dubrovnik northern walls. Notably, the rook is more stout/thicker in the Minceta design.

I've seen some amazing wood and stone chess sets on Facebook Marketplace for ridiculously inexpensive. Some are (supposedly) Staunton, according to the sellers.
