Chess Software

Hello everyone,

I am looking for some chess software to improve my game. I am actively looking for new ways to get better. I have an hour lesson each week and I do tactics/chess mentor training. I am still looking for a bit more, though.

What is the best chess software for someone at my rating?

In addition, you can recommend a good book if you would like :)

Thanks

Which version of Fritz? Perhaps even a link?

Does Fritz offer any type of analysis or practice? Or is it simply an engine to play against? Sorry, I am not familiar with it at all.

Thanks

Anyone else? :)

There seem to be a lot of different versions and sellers. Does anyone know where i can get the full version for a decent price?

Thanks!

Look into free stuff first.  There really is no reason to buy Fritz or ChessBase.  There are only like a couple of largely useless things they can do that free software can't.  Look into Lucas Chess which has many great training modes.  Totally free and under active development.

Do you have a PC or a Mac? No all software is compatible. Fritz doesn't work in a mac.

If you look at the software section on this site, there is a fantastic little program called 'guess the move'.  It accepts pgn files and allows you to 'guess' what will be the next move and also has a comp engine examine what it believes the best move is.
